Well … ignorance is bliss I say.
A) I applaud you for trying to actually beatmatch on TTs in a DVS system if you have no prior experience with it. It’s a totally different game. Going from controller to CDJ or vice versa = no real problem. Going from vinyl to either or the other way around = a reasonably big deal (although controller to vinyl bigger than vinyl to controller imho).
B) If those guys need to stomp on someone (especially family or family of their friend) to make themselves feel good/bad/kewl/better/hot/whatever, it doesn’t exactly show emotional maturity. If you were my brother, I’d come see if I could help you figure out the laptop not skimp on your controller.
C) There really isn’t a vinyl supremacy anymore. There are still pockets of resistance :-). And if you are an old vinyl hand and like the feeling and possibly have most of the (expensive) gear already, I can see how you would like to go to/stick with vinyl. But every vinyl/DVS jock should realize that all it does it say something about your personal preference and nothing about somebody else’s skills.
There are a few things I’d like to say, ment as positive feedback. For you to consider and disregard if it does not resonate with you or embrace if you think there is something in these words.
1) Don’t EVER attempt to hook your controller up to a system (laptop/PC) that isn’t yours and isn’t prepped properly. If you play with your controller you play with YOUR computer. It does not only have to do with drivers for a controller, but also with soundcard settings, DJ software fine-tuning and settings, collection, PC optimisation and more. Your controller and your computer need to be an inseperable pair, highly tuned to each other. It’s together that they get to shine.
2) If you already notice that these guys like taking the mickey out of you, while brave, it may not be the best idea to then go and try to beat them at THEIR game. With your controller and computer, you might have had a fighting chance. Set up your gear, plug the PA/Speakers into your controller and show them what you can do (with loops, rolls, slices, remix decks or what have you). But to get behind the decks and try your hand at those with a hostile crowd, you were bound to get burned.
So, next time, bring your controller AND your laptop. Make sure you are well prepared and show those vinyl guys what digital DJs can do!
Keep it up, keep the faith and the passion and don’t let some vinyl jocks scare you off your game.
