In all honesty, based on my experiences, when a GIRL says she wants “rap music” and she’s not dressed as some b-boy culture queen, then it REALLY means she wants POP MUSIC that isn’t fast-paced like house.

“Can you play some rap, like Britney Spears or Beyonce?”

I kid you not…someone actually asked me that.

I didn’t get mad, but understood what the average person sees as “rap music”. They simply lumped any pop tune with that slower tempo and beats as “rap music”. You might want to find out how “deep” this girl is in hip-hop culture. I guarantee she’s just wanting popular stuff like Black Eyed Peas, P Diddy, Missy Elliot, Beyonce, Notorious BIG, Jennifer Lopez, etc.

So the results. Last night went awesome! When I first got there I basically played what ever people wanted if it were to be bay area rap, hip hop, dance etc. But once 10:30 or so hit I went into my dj set and I had the whole room dancing. Every now and then the bday girl (drunk at this point) would come up and ask me to change the music so I listened, but other than that I played what I felt the crowd wanting. But I did every now and then switch it back to rap for a few songs.

Anyways, After the party was stopped around 1 I started to gather my things and pack up to leave. People were coming up to me and shaking my hand saying that “finally a dj that actually plays good music”. As I was leaving people continued to tell me how good the music was and thanking me nonstop. It was actually funny that the ONLY complaint I received was that I played the “rap crap”. Hahaha go figure. Anyways, so I left with a few future gigs being ready to be lined up and overall it was an awesome night. 🙂

Good to hear Paul – I think that is still one of the most important aspects of being a DJ is being able to read a crowd properly. Because, as in this case, they sometimes don’t really know what they want to hear. I played a graduation party and when I asked them what to play they said country…. I played some at the start but set it off with some old school hip hop after their HUGE reaction to regulators.
