    Check out our PA guide:

    Basic rules in PA:

    1. There are no miracles, you get what you pay for
    2. Size DOES matter (to a certain degree)
    3. Check if you have enough Wattage, especially open air
    4. There are no miracles, you get what you pay for
    5. Check out the product specifications, such as dynamic range, frequency response,… (from most good manufacturers they are true)
    6. Get good cables
    7. If it is cheap, it will sound cheap
    8. There are no miracles, you get what you pay for

Samson’s 380? Well 300 Watt is not much… I would say indoors for 60 people tops in a square room, less if the room is shaped and outdoors… 20 people right in front of you.

The Stagepass 600i is quite OKish, but also for smaller audiences, I think JBL has a similar system that is decent.

Thanks, Terry. Yep, I’m just getting something for those really small small venues/gatherings where I would elect not to bring the laptop and controller, but use an iPod instead.

i like the small form factors speakers such as qsc k8’s,the EV zxa1, or yamaha dxr8. these speakers sound great and can GROW with you as your budget allows. they all offer matching subs as well for future upgrading.

BUT dont say no to just using a single 12″ two way, i had a bbq party this past weekend that i used a single qsc k12 and i actually had to turn it down. (about 40 people)

it was more than enough volume wise, i know some people dont have the budgets for the higher end lines but you really do get what you pay for. If your in this seriously consider the best you can afford. You’ll spend more in the end buying cheap then having to buy quality speakers down the line.

Yep, quality trumps everything everytime. The thing with using only one speakers is that you will have to turn it up to be heard farther away in which case it gets too loud close to the speaker (the infamous “speaker bubble” where nobody wants to stand/dance). So utitilising more (2 minimum but 4 works real well also) speakers means you can get a better overall sound level without having to push the individual speakers too much.

Apart from the less than optimal bass in 8″ (anything under 12″ really) speakers, I find that 4 well placed 8″ speakers (preferably with 1 or 2 subs) CAN potentially give you a better, more even sound than two 12″ up front (depending a bit on the shape and size of a venue of course). Another bonus, sometimes, is that the 4 speakers when set in a square facing each other is that it more or less “forces” a dance floor. And for some reason it seems easier to get people to dance when their is a proper dance floor “area” (at least for the kind of gigs I do, some dance bars don’t have a dance area and people just have at it wherever they are standing :-).

So, even if I don’t need it sound level wise, I will still often set up a second set of active speakers to define the dance area (so not having them face further down the venue, but back towards the DJ).

    Just my two cents.

    Greetinx,
    C.
