For that budget, you can get proper, pro level kit. (Are we talking USD here? I’m never sure when people just use a $ sign – this is a multinational forum… 🙂 )

I would recommend (whatever you get) getting subs and tops from the same brand though – often they are all designed to work together. You are right that 2 12″ tops and an 18″ sub will probably be your best bet.

    Possible options:

Mackie SRM 550/1850 setup. Rough cost: $2100 USD
QSC KW122/KW181 Setup. Rough cost: $3600 USD (A little over budget..)
QSC K12/KW181 Setup Rough cost: $3000 USD
Yamaha DSR112/DSR118W Setup. Rough cost: $2800 USD
JBL PRX712/PRX718XLF Setup. Rough cost: $2900

Any of these will sound decent – I recommend you go to a decent shop and have a listen to as many alternatives as you can. Sound is a very personal thing though – some people prefer the way that JBL sound, some people prefer QSC. It’s entirely subjective and I recommend you listen to them properly in person.

Electro Voice Live X. It would at up to, $2699.00. and thats 2 tops 2 subs. i run this setup, and i can handle 350 heads easy, all night withough a single limiter light, at 8/10 volume. they are unbelievable, and, they sound warm, musical, and the bass from the tops alone is enough for say, a outdoor bbq. give it a look see. http://www.amazon.com/Electro-Voice-ELX115P-ELX118P-Active-System/dp/B00GJ5QZOA/ref=sr_1_3?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1433540394&sr=1-3&keywords=ev+elx118p

Whoops.. forgot EV!! I couldn’t find any US pricing for any kit (I’m in the UK and websites are too clever by half auto-detecting my location and sending me to the UK store..) but they decent bits of kit. The EV ZXA5 Tops are meant to be pretty much the best you can get at the minute though – maybe consider getting a pair of them (they are around $1699 each just for the tops!) and getting a sub later when you can afford it? (They will be fine without for a while – they are really powerful!)

Personally I’d swap the Mackie SRMs for the HD-series. Wood cabinets instead of plastic (need some more TLC but can’t beat wood) and definitely at another level imho. I am using a combo of two HD1221 (which I used on the couch of a canal boat in Amsterdam only yesterday because I couldn’t find room to put the stands 🙂 ) with a single HD1801 sub (which I mostly keep tuned down by 3-6db (it’s that strong). After many years of renting I bought it a few years ago and they are still sweet sounding speakers.

Another pretty safe but more expensive option would be RCF. Highly pro level, but as said, with a matching price tag.

The only downside to the HD’s being that I doubt you can find a set under $3000..?

And I have never liked the sound of RCF speakers – the ones I have heard have always sounded a bit harsh and piercing (even when run full-range!) – and they weren’t the cheap ones either – my Thump’s sound better than they did and they are about a 3rd of the price!!

Sweetwater.com (just an example) has 1221s on sale for 799 (twice makes 1.600) and a 1801 for 999. Grand total 2.600 leaving budget for covers (HIGHLY recommended) or a two-speaker flightcase (better than covers, but you need big transport :-), stands (K&M being the big brand here) and cables (get a dual XLR to run to the sub and two single XLRs to run sub to tops.
