Yes this is sad, but you cannot go around it and the seller usually is not responsible.
For instance I DJed a wedding few weeks back, and the couple would have liked some rock/metallica songs in the mix. So they hooked me up with an iTunes voucher to buy the record, which I did. It sounded terrible and I contacted CS of Apple and they told me they did not master it. So I went out and bought the CD just because at weddings everything should be perfect… put it into my CDJ and -> CRAP. Seems like even a high profile band like metallica can produce utterly bad sounding CDs and nobody worries…. well not my usual genre anyways, but hey…

I had a similar issue with a bad MP3 from a reputable site (I won’t name names but one of the big guys) and I just emailed them. They gave me a credit towards future purchases. From my experience if you put the pressure on, they will cave eventually.

Yes I think that was that album… it was over compressed realy bad hissing… tin can passages. Some parts sounded like a 64k mp3.

That Metallica album is notorious for its dreadful mastering. And that’s what it gets down to. A well mastered 128k MP3 will sound better than a poorly mastered vinyl record. It’s actually interesting, CDs manufactured in the 80s often sound better than the new “digitally remastered” discs. Those older ones were mastered on analog gear that was at the height of the technology.

Tin can sounding snare? That’s St. Anger for sure, not only does that album lack production but it’s just awful altogether. The album …And Justice For All also lacks on good production as the bass is practically non existent. But damn if it wasn’t amazing anyways. It’s funny how the biggest names can still fall victim to lousy production.

Well i don’t know where you guys buy your music from, i buy most of mine from TID, and every time i’ve had a bad sounding track or if the track has a jump or skip in it TID have always credited my account to buy another track of my choice…..but i suppose different sites have different policies.
