id3 tags are essential, stripping them is bogus. I would recommend looking into correctly tagging all your files rather than renaming them all. id3 tags are much more useful than filenames.

As for backup I use either MacOS build in backup or the free Version of Veeam Client backup (Windows).

Distancing yourself from iTunes as a Mac User is not that easy however and Rekordbox does only support iTunes import and playlists, but no other alternatives (like MediaMonkey etc.) hence most DJs still use iTunes for keeping it clean.

    Hi,

I can create playlists from my collection? Doesn’t have to be from iTunes. I want to distance myself from iTunes as i dont trust the way they are taking it. I do think that in the near future, they will stop the downloads and it will just be a streaming service, hence why they are dropping the cost of Apple Music.

ID3 tags are generic, and not iTunes specific. iTunes simply read the tags, and present them in the view. Rekordbox and MIK does the same.

Good ID3 tags are essential to any music collection.

So what thing would you put in the id3 tags? Which software would be best to input the id3 tags?

MP3 tags are not a thing, they are a series of labels you can attach to a track to add relevant information. Look here for a full list: http://help.mp3tag.de/main_tags.html

Some are automatically filled, others you can fill yourself. It is fully up to you which labels you want to use and in what way.

Standard programs are MP3Tag, Tag&Rename and Mixed in Key now has some integrated tag editing as well. Also you can change tags from programs like iTunes and DJ Software.

I totally understand you wanting to move away from iTunes. The reason why most DJs still use it are simple: iTunes does store your music away very nicely and in a way that it is easy to backup and recover if must be as you simply backup the media folder and iTunes Library.xml and your files and playlists are safe.
Secondly iTunes has a lot more features when it comes to “smart playlists”. Now especially Rekordbox and Serato are catching up with their smart crate features, but there are some that are still missing. If those feature are not needed by you, then you are fine just doing the playlists in your DJ software.
The next thing for us older DJs, we still have and are still getting CDs from labels for free. Hence we need to rip them to mp3s before we can play them. iTunes has a really good encoder (especially if you work on MacOS) and automatically fills in all the id3 tags you need. Filter it through MIK and you never need to edit a tag again.

Now such things can also be done by other software of course, but it is way harder and more cumbersome. I am totally on board with you, I am wanting to move away from iTunes too, but I have not found a solid alternative yet.

    Hi,

I think I have nailed it.

Import song into MIK 8 and change the name of the song in the following format..

    ARTIST – SONG – MIX

And then let it analyse the key and energy. Import that into Rekordbox and it all works perfectly.

It automatically changes the name of the track in its folder (when you change the name of the track in MIK) its stored in too so its all sorted.

Now I just make backups of the place the music is stored in and I’m good to go.
