ParticipantWhile there are certainly going to be clubs that are CDJ only, the number has been going down (though the newly released ones theoretically might see a resurgence in that). There will probably be a strong regional “taste” in that regard, though, so check out the venues you’d like to play and see if you can get a look at their booth.
If you can’t find a store that will let you gefingerenpokeren their CDJs (not actually that surprising, shops can be a bit uptight about letting people play with their expensive toys), and you find you really do need to practice on them for your favorite local clubs, it might be possible to rent them from a rental place – you might even be able to swing a price reduction by renting in the middle of the week when the rental place is likely to have them sitting on the shelf collecting dust as opposed to weekend use.
Pretty sure the XDJ-1000 is a CDJ-1000 without the CD slot, though, so that will probably be passable as practice, since the CD slot is vestigial these days anyway… but you’re not going to get much practice just playing around in the store.
Good luck! (I really hope I never have a gig that’s going to be uptight about CDJs.)

ModeratorYep, welcome to the limitations of the CDJ. 3 hot cues is all you get, even on CDJ2000NXS (their top of the line currently in clubs). No knobs for FX or other nice things you expect to find on a controller. Definitely no waveforms like you have them on your laptop (although the ones on the 2000NXS are ok). So, the best way (as a controller DJ) to use club gear, is to hook up your laptop with DJ Software and hook up both CDJs in HID mode. At least you now have the full advantage of big screen and real keyboard track browsing and parallel waveforms.
If you can DJ on a controller, you can DJ on a CDJ, it’s not a magical box, just a very expensive media player that has been surpassed in features by even the simplest of controllers.
Our advice here, not surprisingly, is to bring your controller/laptop to the club, plug into their PA and use the full power of the gear you are used to!

Participant“Would I be able to play CDJ 2000 once I figure out the XDJ?
what are the differences?..”Yes and besides the screen, not much really. It’s also definitely a regional thing too. I’ve been to maybe a few shows, (3 if I remember right) where there wasn’t a DJM and CDJs in the booth or on the table. But I’m here in the USA, CO specifically.
“it looks like I can only see the first three hot cues I set w Rekordbox on XDJ, is there a way to see more hot cues?”
Change the RB settings if possible to CDJ/XDJ and you should have 8 assuming you’re using 4.0+ But I don’t know if these will translate over to a CDJ/XDJ. (My guess is they won’t without a firmware upgrade to the player itself)
“I put comments/note on hot cues on Rekordbox, is there a way to see the comments on XDJ/CDJ? (playlist exported in USB)”
As far as I know, no. But you can put them the comments field but my RB is limited to the offline player and using CDJs in HID mode for SSL.
“how can I sort the tracks on XDJ/CDJ in order of the list I set up in rekord box?”
Preferences> CDJ & devices> Sort If none of those work for you, then you’re screwed. You can’t make a custom sort by category.
“is it possible to see the two waveforms horizontally on one screen on XDJ/CDJ like the display I see on serato dj?”
No. That’s exclusive to proper DJ software like Serato. A Definite plus if you DJ that way.
As for a place to practice, basically, if GC doesn’t have them out (Which they won’t as they want to sell the XDJ 700 & 1000s), then you’re either stuck renting them or seeing if any of your friends have a pair they’ll let you use/borrow. If there is also some smaller music stores, you could hit them up and see if they have a pair out. They won’t let you use them all day obviously, but it’s an hour or two at least.
Most places are starting to be more controller friendly, so if it’s a deal breaker for you, call them up and ask about you plugging in your SR to an open mixer channel and using your laptop. Unless you decide to spend the 3 to 500 $ to get a Serato box (Denon DS1 or Rane SL2) (assuming Serato usage here) or they have a 900 SRT and you already own the DVS upgrade, you can’t do HID anyways.

ParticipantYeah, I would think that a club that is going to require you use the CDJs is going to be a rare thing, even if they still got theirs sitting in the booth.
