It’s up to how creative and adventurous you are feeling. I am old school and I get squirmish if we go more than 3-4 bpm up or down.

There are some technical limitations, like the amount of work the CPU has to do as the difference becomes bigger is increasing (a lot). At some point there can be audible artifacts from the key-lock processing happening.

And then there is the “feeling” of a track. Especially well-known tracks. I always feel something is “off” when the speed difference becomes to big. So I always fear the audience could be feeling the same.

Again, if it fits some creative urge, go with it. It may just work out. I’ll stick to my 3-4 bpm though. Anything more than that is needed? There are few other tricks than straight beatmatching we have in our toolbox, right?

I have to say Traktor is one of the worst when it comes to keylock, it creates serious artefacts after more than 3 bpm changes.

Yes,,,but I only really hear them when I’m playing on a big sound system. When I’m practicing at home it’s less apparent,,,,,

Then you should get better monitor speakers 😉

Using RCF 312A at Home,,,,damn good monitors in my opinion,,,,

That is a PA speaker not a monitor. (Speaking in studio terms.)
Of course you can use the 312A as a stage or booth monitor, but it does not qualify (sound quality wise) as a nearfield monitor for studio/home DJ use.

So no it is not a good nearfield flat response monitor and a rather average (sound quality) quality PA speaker, that is however high efficiency (aka it is very loud for its power rating).

I had this same discussion with another DJ I was having a practice set with, beat mixing isn’t the only trick we have up our sleeves people. Be creative

Unfortunately I can not afford Studio monitors so I’ll have to stick with my PA’s to do the job!

    Thanks for the input!!!

One of the things I discovered early on was to have enough music to move up (or down) in small changes in BPM. Back before Keylocking a track digitally I’d absolutely hate the sound of a track sped up or slowed down dramatically.

Nobody ever said that any transition has to be beatmatched. Actually I think there are loads more transitions where beatmatching is absolutely not needed and the change of BPM can even be extremely drastic…

When I want to do that,I use the “Turntable” effect in Traktor to make a drastic change.Works pretty good,,,,

    Eliah,

Yeah,,back in the day the sound of a track that was sped up so much that it sounded like chipmunks used to drive me crazy!
