All your music will be sorted through reckordbox,so of a club has cdjs 850/900/2000 you can take your music on a usb stick and away you go. Or take your controller and plug into a channel on the club’s mixer

As your music will be sorted through rekordbox most of your tracks will be on time etc So you wouldn’t need adjust the pitch that much,

And there is a sync button which will bypass you having to adjust the pitch to beatmatch.

I would love this controller however it will not fit in the dj booth where I play. So that is another thing to think about.

well, if u want the cdj feel and if ur budget permits, go for the xdj 1000. but then it all depends on ur personal choice.

The thing that you have wrong is the “most likely to play on CDJs” bit. More and more clubs welcome and even expect DJs to show up with their own gear.

So the old “it’s a club, they’ll have CDJs” thinking is getting behind the curve. Personally I think RekordBox is not in the same class as any of the big DJ software programs. At the end of the day it’s a sophisticated collection management tool at best.

Tried the XDJ for about an hour: My conclusio: Was as outdated as CDJs the moment it arrived on the shelf and actually gets beaten down by Pioneer’s very own controllers.

It’s funny, as someone who started out with controllers I’ve been thinking that I should get some sort of CDJ/DJM/XDJ setup at home so I can learn on “club standard” gear. But it seems more and more that clubs and bars expect DJs to bring their own gear anyway.

I think a lot of this whole CDJs/vinyl vs. laptops rivalry comes down to optics. Arguably it looks “cooler” not to be using a laptop in the booth, instead using big, expensive-looking things with a Pioneer logo on them. But even at large clubs now there’s probably going to be a laptop in the booth somewhere (the next DJ playing, maybe).

I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are bringing $2000-$3000 worth of gear (laptop and controller) to a place with drunk people moving around wildly. 🙂

In large clubs the audience wont see what you use unless:
You have a really really tall laptop stand or you like to take CDJs and wink them in the air.

DJ booths in most big clubs have a screen so the audience will never see your gear and in most cases even funky lights in there. So all the audience will see is you moving your hand behind that screen or in those cases where the booth is embedded in the club more deeply people from a floor above you or to the side of you might see what you are using.

Also “the club standard” is becoming a thing of the past. In all the big clubs (Ministry of Sound, Octagon, Blue Lagoon, The Jungle, Cage, Gravity,…) that have a world class standing the new club standard is: You get sent the contact information of the on duty technician at least a week before your gig. He phones you up and you tell them what gear you bring and how you want it laid out in the booth. They tell you who plays before you and what they suggest for “handover”. You then arrive at the venue at least 3-4 hours before your gig and hand your stuff to the tech, who will have a chat with you. Then you go backstage and enjoy yourself until the assistant calls you to the booth.

Now yes this is world class clubs and you have to have a name to get that full package, but it basically is a boiled down version of that in most bigger clubs even if you are a noname (yet).
