ParticipantI’ve tried it a couple of times with my DDJ-SR. The software looks like the lovechild between Serato and the rekordbox library. Which is not really a bad thing, because the rekordbox library has many, very useful features. All of which are present. There are a few differences, but it looks pretty simmilar.
The effect section is what you’d expect on a Pioneer mixer. Even the color effects are there. They sound just like on the mixers so it’s very usable. There are more coming in the future as well, but you’ll need to pay extra for those. But you can go very far with the ones already in.
The sampler has 8 slots and 4 banks, so that’s more like Cross DJ than Serato. It does have a step sequencer though, which I like a lot. Quantize has a seperate setting for samples and decks so you can choose to have quantize on for samples but not for decks etc. To me, the only thing the rekordbox sampler has over the remix decks is that it can play 8 samples per sampler, so 16 in total. But that’s kind of useless for finger drumming because there’s only 8 of them per side and no midi mapping. For putting loops over tracks, 8 is a bit overkill if you’d ask me.
For me it’s not a replacement in any way, shape or form for the remix decks, but it’s a nice start.Midi mapping supposedly is coming, but not present. I wouldn’t expect other brands of controllers to be supported as a main controller, Pioneer has said it wants to put all of pioneer in one ecosystem. Maybe you’ll be able to map a modular controller on the side, like Serato has done. That would make more sense.
I like it, but I don’t think I’m going to step away from Traktor just yet. But if midi mapping is available and it’s a bit more streamlined there’s a very big chance I’ll switch. I’d only have to manage one collection for my controller gigs and my CDJ gigs which is a big, no, enourmous benefit. Native instruments would only get me back by offering Maschine integration in Traktor.

ParticipantHey Marco,
thanks for a very good “review”.
I have to say I really love the way the Remix decks work in Traktor. I do not do finger drumming so much as trigger samples and rhythmic elements, but still I think their great. I use the D2s which combined with my 1210s (and DB4) are great, but from the moment I heard that Pioneer is going to full on to the DJ software side I have been sort waiting to see what is really going to happen also waiting for comprehensive reviews.
My guess is they will come up with a new player very soon (the “left side” of DDJ-RZ) and once they do they can, in my mind, combine all that is good in f.ex. my present set + the easiness of CDJ vs DVS. DVS is cool of course, but a bit of a hassle with the jumping needles etc.
If their sample-system syncs with the main decks I will definitely consider it. I do not use sync otherwise, but with f.ex. seven samples running in the background it would be just too much of hassle to sync them by ear..probably just a horrible mess..:-)
I recon the only way to try it is with their own controllers so I have just go and test it. Personally I am very lazy with any mappings and that is one reason I love NI because its just plug and play.
I have just begun my journey with Ableton (and Push) so that is something to consider too.
Anyway. Thanks again, happy DJing and have a great weekend.

ParticipantI do really love this software it is in a way much like Mixvibe Cross but it has the effects that Cross is missing I will be switching very soon. I spent the most part of yesterday mapping it to XDJ-Aero and have gotten it functional but the jog wheels are not working yet so can’t really use it for proper mixing 🙁 The DDJ-SP1 I got working really fast

ParticipantYeah you both mention Mixvibe… I have never even seen it so I guess its time to take a look:-)
I see the Pioneer DJ really has 8 sample slots and if i understood right you can have them on both sides, so enough slots to say the least…
I suppose the guys at Serato can not be too happy about all this. You can not escape the feeling that they are victims of being too friendly with Pioneer.
Anyway it looks really good.

ParticipantThat’s an interesting video. Although he did mention his system was analysing his library so that may be a reason for the latency issue, maybe or maybe not.
I’m thinking of getting DDJ-RX as this software seems like it may be the way forward in he long run

ModeratorNope, the Midi add-on (which apparently will let you map non-Pioneer controllers) isn’t due til fall next year at the earliest I think.
