    Hello Quant-RT,

    NAMM2015 has brought a lot of good news to us this year. One of the biggest announcements at NAMM made by Serato is that in the very near future, with the next release of Serato DJ, you will be able to plug your laptop directly into any of the following mixers: DJM-900NXS, DJM-850 , A&H DB2 & A&H DB4 without the need of an external audio interface or any Serato enabled device.

    In order to be able to do that, you will need to purchase the Serato Club Kit bundle (Priced 169$) from Serato website (or inside your Serato software) – when available. Club Kit is just a bundle of a Serato DJ license and the DVS expansion pack.

    You can find more details on the Serato website using the following link:

    I hope this solves your issue in a way or another.

    Cheers
    Ray

    Also I would not fear that actually.
    I have DJed in about 20 different clubs in 2014 and I ALWAYS used my own controller, no matter what CDJ was in the booth.
    In the smaller clubs I simply plugged the output of my controller into a free channel of the club mixer (in many cases a DJM 900 or 900 Nexus) and simply used that channel to cutover from the previous DJ.
    In the bigger clubs they have a house tech anyways and they will setup and sound check your controller for you.

    I in no way want to get restricted to the limited functions of CDJs, I want to use all the possibilities that my controller gives me to make my performance what it is and I had ZERO complaints in any venue.
    Apart from what some people think, many managers and promoters (and especially house techs) actually find it to be more “pro” if you know what you want and how you want to setup.

    @Ray
    Thanks for the heads up. I’ve just read the blog on Serato.
    I’m going to check with Serato to see if I have the licences for the DVS system and/or Serato DJ as I moved from the DVS system to the DDJ-SX controller, removing the mixer from the equation.
    Forgive me for my ignorance, as I’m just starting to get my head around this all, but if I do get the Club Kit, does it mean that, subject to the club having a compatible mix, I can access and use Serato (including all the cue points etc..) directly through the laptop using the CDJs and mixer?

    @Terry

    Nice one, thanks for the words of advice. I always thought that it would be considered a bit of a nuisance parking up your controller in what could be an already cramped DJ booth. I guess you just have to find a spot for it and crack on…

    Indeed, most of the time it is no hassle at all, since most clubs are there longer they still have a wider booth than the CDJ setup, since some time ago they needed to park record decks there which take up considerably more space.
    Also most booths have a spot where you would have parked your huge case(s) for your vinyls or CDs which usually came in cases this size

    CD case

    So there usually is enough space for most controllers unless you have an NS7 II or bigger. And if it is not enough, putting one CDJ out of the way is easy enough.

    Last year I had a single venue owner who asked me after I setup why I did not use their Nexus setup and I simply answered “because with my setup I can do this:” and did a little performance pad slicer remix… discussion was over in 20 seconds flat.

    Hey Rob,

    The Club Kit will allow you to, when plugging your laptop into (let’s say) the DJM-900NXS, open the 2/4 deck view for you in Serato DJ without the need to plug a compatible device (like your DDJ-SX). It will allow you as well to control your decks through DVS (using timecode either through USB plugged in the CDJ, a timecode CD, or timecode Vinyls in case the club is providing Turntables). You can also control your decks in HID mode by plugging the CDJs through USB into your laptop (in case you have a Mac, you might need a USB hub as you have a total of 3 USB connections to be done while all newer Mac models give you only 2 USB ports).

    Now coming back to the Cue points, cue points are stored with each track inside your laptop/software. They are not hardware dependent, meaning that any hardware supporting Cue points triggering will make them function and they will always be saved with your track. If we take the example of a CDJ2000/CDJ2000NXS (being a club standard setup), they support 3 cue points triggering which you can find on the upper left side of the deck labeled A, B & C. These will trigger the first 3 cue points (out of 8) saved in Serato DJ if you are USING HID (DVS will not work). If you need to be able to control all 8 cue points in Serato DJ along with other functions like Slicer, Loop Rolls, etc… the most affordable route to go in order to complement the club setup would be the Akai AFX, an Official Serato Accessory, which will give you comprehensive advanced functionality on all 4 decks.

    So long story short: Hooking up your own controller is about 500% more easy than what Shepherd described…

    Thanks guys for taking the time to respond and explain.

    It will probable all depend on when (and if) get my first set and whether the software is available.

    I do love my controller, but also like the fact that you could potentially rock up with just your laptop.

    Decisions, Decisions…It’s nice to know there are a couple of options available anyways.

    I actually did that a few years back.
    I only played festivals and mobile gigs with my controller and went to the Club not even with a laptop but with a prepared USB stick (simply exported via Rekordbox onto USB). Just because only showing up with a USB stick and a backup stick was so easy and convenient.
    Then one night a promoter asked me: Hey you rocked the lake festival and I somehow do not get this vibe in the club. Did you do something else there?

    This actually hit me like a rock. I was limiting myself in the club simply because it was convenient to use their gear and only carry 2 sticks with me…. so I stopped and since carry my controller and laptop in a good backpack. My hiring rate after a gig skyrocketed after that.
