You can do more than one, there’s no rules. Pick what you’re good at and enjoy, do that.

Agreed. I think you’re better off being versatile. Granted some narrow-minded folk want their DJs typecasted into genres…but you can have more fun being able to switch around scenes. Plus it helps beat the “saturation blues” when music shopping.

I have been involved in electronic dance music ( I hate saying that but you know what I mean) for a little over a year now, I used to be a rap guy but what drew me to edm was the huge amount of variety that exists in addition to the huge amount of quality music in the genre. It would be very hard to limit myself to only certain scenes within the genre because I just wanna hear what sounds good, and one thing that I instinctively know is that if you are playing a bunch of great music, people are going to have fun and the people who will complain that you are hopping subgenres too much are not there to have fun, and therefore you need not worry about them.

Yes and no on switching genres. It’s fine if you’re in your bedroom, but it’s not so great if you show up to see a deep house dj who suddenly decides he’s into dubstep. Extremes of course but you see my point. I, like many others, do more than one style. How did I settle on my main “scene”? I listened to music and followed what I like. You like the big names right now, start there and follow down the rabbit hole, you’ll find what you like best.

I knew what I wanted to play when I started DJing, which was Funk, Disco and Hip Hop.

However, over time that grew to include at least another 15 other genres and sub-genres.

Half the fun of DJing is listening and learning about to new and different music. If you are passionate about it and keep an open mind you will no doubt have a much wider taste in music in next 3-5 years for sure.
