    I can’t offer any help unfortunately but I’m getting to be in the same boat. I feel like something that’s holding me back is not having my own system so I can play anywhere, anytime, so I’m interested to hear any input as well.
    I’ve looked into it a bit and I hear that for the most part Mackie’s are a good low cost, high quality pick.

    Currently what I’m thinking about getting are 2 Mackie Thump Series TH-15A 400-Watt 15″ and a JBL EON 518S 18-inch 500-Watt. Is it bad to mix brands on speakers? And what cords will I require? I feel that the whole PA system world is greek to me.

    I imagine that it’s not ideal to mix brands but as long as there isn’t a big power/eq difference between them I don’t know why it would be a problem. Cords are usually either RCAs or XLRs depending on what inputs/outputs the system and your controller/mixer has or what your preferences are regarding balanced/unbalanced connections.
