Hi, I fixed your post, so the links are visible and deleted the two correction comments. Hopefully it looks like you originally intended.

As for your post. I’d agree with the Fender kit. It’s nice, but more aimed at a sing-a-song writer, mostly acoustic combo or something. Street artist, things like that. It’s got loads of stuff you don’t need and few things you do need are lacking. So, first option is a strike out.

Second option is a set of Mackie Thumps (15″) or an equal alternative from the likes of QSC, EV or JBL. Setting aside personal preference, I’d feel perfectly comfortable doing a party the size you describe with the expected amount of people with this setup. They are about 400Watt RMS. You have two for a total of 800Watt. Rule of thumb is 5Watt per person indoor, outdoor approximately double that. So 800 divided by 10 = approx. 80 people. Well above the expected maximum of 60.

You can expect to run these speakers hard and provide plenty of loudness on a “dancefloor” area in front of the speakers. Obviously (especially outdoors) don’t expect full power in the far corners of the yard. It will be nice and loud where people can dance and still conversationable in the rest of the yard.

The only other drawback (but this is highly dependant on your musical choice, the crowd and the expected sound levels) of having only two speakers is that you can lack a bit of (sub)low end. A (one should be enough in this case, imho) subwoofer would correct that easily enough.

I think rental on a subwoofer to fit these tops should not run much over 60-70 bucks. Bringing the total to 120-130. Still cheaper than option 4. I would personally not recommend the Behringers until you have listened to them yourself. It’s not my favorite brand, but that’s just me. They’re a lot of proverbial “bang” for the buck and some of their speakers really aren’t that bad – for the money.

Another tip is: negotiate with the rental company!
The prices you quote are on their website. So that is the price you can charge for them (plus obviously your transport cost!). But, you are like a dealer for them. Tell them you are an up and coming mobile DJ that expects to be doing a lot of gigs in the future and you are looking for a solid company to deal with for your PA needs. Tell them you will charge your customers their prices as mentioned on their website, but that you have to live too and need some margin.
I have discounts ranging from 15-25% on rental gear from the companies I work with.

You are not the end-user, so don’t accept end-user prices from a rental company. You are a guy that is gonna come back many time and do a part of their work, namely selling their rental gear.

    Hope all that helps.

Loads of luck with the gig. Focus on the fun (sh*t is bound to happen on your first gig, part of the learning curve) and enjoy. There will only ever be one FIRST GIG, so make sure you live every minute of it, regardless of how it went. 20 years from know you will want to think back fondly to your first gig (no matter how good it goes, it will look like first baby steps in 20 years 😀 ). So, make sure you have those fond memories.

    Hey DJ Vintage,

Thanks for the more than valuable response!

Today I go in and test out the speakers and decide on a pair for the party (which is less than 4 days away).

After reading your advice, and talking with the guys from the rental company, I think my total cost will equal out to somewhere between 130-150 (with the subwoofer included). Of course when I get there I will try to talk the price down, on the basis that I very well might be a return customer. After this party who knows what happens next. If it goes well there will be parties in my backyard all summer!

Also, I appreciate the encouragement. I lost count of how many times I’ve gotten chills and mini anxiety attacks just thinking about the fact that it’s my first real gig. That lots of people will be there. That lots of things might happen or not. And in that anxiety I’ve found a certain calm. Knowing that I can only do so much. Only some things I can control and others I can’t. This fear has also allowed me to channel my energies and really immerse myself in the music. The music is what got me here. The music. I’m learning to focus on the fun (like you said) and really enjoy the process. If I can get some heads bobbing and some people dancing and smiling then I did more than enough. Small victories.

I’ll try to post back here soon with the update on the speaker situation. Thanks again.
