ParticipantDo you announce that it’s not your mix? I think if you’re the DJ and a mix is playing people are going to assume it’s your mix unless you tell them otherwise. I play other DJ’s remixes of single songs or edits of songs. I would never play another DJ’s mix of several songs and along the same lines I also don’t play others mashups. If I need a break I’ll play one of my own short mixes.

MemberGawd no! I have waaay to much fun deciding a set for myself and playing it out..

MemberI would never do that. If I needed a pre-recorded mix it would still be one of my own.

MemberI always bring 2-3 pre recorded 10-15 min Mini mixes of my own… mainly for bathroom breaks… etc Not ever another dj’s mix.
I do play other dj’s remixes and mash ups from soundcloud. I follow a few cool ones on soundcloud, and they are always thrilled when I tell them I dropped one of there tracks in a set.
This could start a whole another debate though… lol

MemberYEa, a true Dj NEVER plays another Dj Mix. you can play their remixes of a song and such but a WHOLE mix? NEVER!!! Just my opinion 🙂

MemberGotta agree, I wouldn’t ever play another DJ’s mix. It may very well be awesome, but that just serves to make me aspire to be as awesome.

MemberI play other remixes and mashups – some of girl talks stuff is just so great and goes so well with a crowd but I don’t ever play more than one at a time. – I play my own long mixes when it’s dead as in I’m playing to an empty room, or if I need a break.

Participantnever played out someone else’s mix.. what fun is there?? you should record your own mixes at home and when the time comes that you need to step away you can play your own mixes while your absent from the booth..

ParticipantI’m lost…are you speaking of playing let’s say a full mix compilation another DJ did as part of your set?
Or REMIXES of tracks and even short “megamixes” other DJs have done that are usually 7-15 min long?
It’s different worlds in my opinion…please specify.

ParticipantLook to other DJ’s mixes for inspiration.
But other than that, you shouldn’t actually play it during a live set. I mean I know it may not be your intention to act like its yours, but that’s what people will assume.
What fun is there? I know I personally rock out the whole time, jumping up and down, etc. At the end of the night, I’m tired as hell, but it’s worth it. Nothing quite like it.
You really need to take a break, let a song play out longer before you mix it into another one. Or as someone suggested, play your own mixes for bathroom breaks or w/e

MemberI’m quite a bit confused here. What are we guys pertaining to here? Let’s get this straight. if we say:
DJ Mix(set): It is much like a Megamix of sort with songs transitioning one after the other just like how we transition our mixes.
DJ Remixes: A song or a tune, modified to sound a bit different from the original
Mashup: A combination of two songs made to sound like one.
So what are we trying to point at here? I personally play DJ remixes and mashups, but not an entire DJ Mix(set) or a mixset in my own words. It’s much like I play remixes and mashups during my mixsets, but not other DJ’s entire mixsets. Does that even make sense?

MemberA-Trak & Girl Talk certainly make their way into my sets, but I’m not playing a whole Baby Anne (mega)Mix for an hour

MemberDJ Mixes (mixtapes) – no way. I have a backup cd which is 30mins of my own recording which acts as my backup/changeover/dunny break CD. But no way would I concider using someone elses mixtape.
Mash-ups – Occasionally. I try to do similiar stuff live by dropping accapellas over breaks, but occasionally I’ll use someone elses work, especially if it’s a blend of two songs the crowld will love.
Remixes – Definatly! In my eyes, a remix put in the public domain is the same as an origional from a producer (in fact remixing is almost like producing!) so I concider it fair game. Remixes are also central to the sets I play, as I use them to convice a crowd to get down on some glitchy electo house by the end of a night 😀
