    Hi Roberto,

    I think the Pioneer DDJ-SX2 is an excellent choice, I’am also considering it as an upgrade from my current Traktor Kontrol S2 and looking forward to giving Serato a try even though I do like Traktor Pro (However there is a .tsi mapping available).

    As for your laptop with 8GB ram I think that should be just fine, you may consider upgrading the hard drive to an SSD if you haven’t already (I would recommend Samsung EVO SSD Series) from a reliability/performance point of view.

    With regards to monitors, I have read a lot of good feedback/reviews on the JBL LSR305s (~US$300/Pair) and those are the monitors I’m planning to get in the future. They even have a sub-woofer (LSR310S) which is designed to be used with them (sold separately). A sweet simple setup for mixing/production in a home/bedroom studio.

    Best Regards,
    Chris

    SX2 is as close to an industry standard as you’re going to get for all-in-ones, so you can’t go wrong there. Plus it is just an all-around excellent machine. I’d be using one right now if I hadn’t gone back to modular.

    I don’t know that specific model of M-Audio monitor, but based on the model # I’m going to assume it’s a 4″ driver. I’d strongly suggest looking at 5″ drivers as a minimum as anything smaller is going to have extremely limited low end response, and that’s going to frustrate you terribly when trying to mix on them. I can vouch for what Christopher said, JBL 305s are beautiful monitor speakers. I use them in a large space with no sub. The base isn’t “booming”, but you know it’s there, and you can play with it in your mix and have it translate well onto other speakers.

    @Roberto,

    While the SX2 is a great controller (I have the SX), I wouldn’t say it’s a great beginners/starter controller. You might consider getting something a bit more basic in features (still plenty good enough to get you through your start). You could even consider getting something used and you can upgrade as soon as you feel ready.

    The SX2 is pro-level controller that comes with all the bells and whistles. The big risk here is getting drawn into using all it’s functions and exploring all those, maybe becoming a bit overwhelmed by all the buttons that aren’t necessary for “basic” DJ-ing, rather than spending time (lots of it) practicing those basics. It’s like driving a car, you get a decent car to learn to drive and you don’t step into a Ferrari to do that. It’s a way better driving experience, once you understand and have practiced a certain level of driving skills.

    The AV40s are ok if you are on a very tight budget. The JBLs I haven’t heard, so can’t comment. KRK 5s or – better still – 6s are somewhat of the mainstay of low end monitoring. You can go cheaper but “you get what you pay for” starts to kick in hard. The KRKs also have a subwoofer available. The 6s are the better choice imho, as they have a bit more presence in the low end.
    Another option is getting a set of small (used) PA speakers, 10″ or so, which you can also use to play out a friends parties and such. A valuable place to learn the OTHER DJ-skill, knowing what comes next (a.k.a. track selection). Alternatively there are very nice semi-portable PAs consisting of 10 or 12″ subs with two small tops. Also great for playing out, yet compact enough to sit in your practice room. And they look a lot cooler than AV40s 😀

    @Christopher

    I’d personally not go for the SX2 with Traktor. Upgrading from the S2 would be to the S4 or S8. Traktor is really not being very supportive anymore of other manufacturers gear. Who knows what happens with that when a new version comes out (3.0?).

    +1 on the SSD, although I’d personally spend the extra money and get the Samsung Pro version.

    Just my two cents, as usual.

    Hi DJ Vintage,

    Thanks for your advise however the actual reason why I’m considering the SX2 is as you mentioned, Native Instruments is not keen to support other hardware manufacturers and I’m quite disappointed with this as I do like using Traktor Pro 2.

    With regards to the S2 and S4 they perform very well and can get the job done no questions. However, if you ask if they feel like plastic toys…I would have to lean towards yes. Maybe I’m just anal about the look and feel of gear but that’s just me!

    The Kontrol S8 is definitely an awesome controller especially with those built in screens but lack of jogs is one issues for me and also I don’t see myself using the remix decks (which is one of the main features of this controller) and prefer to focus more on mixing music rather than using samples/performance orientated mixing.

    Additionally I would like to get used to a Pioneer CDJ/Mixer layout and after playing around with Serato Dj for a while, I’m starting to really like the simpler/clean interface and setup.

    So to summarize I’m strongly considering ditching Traktor Pro for the simple fact that they expect everyone to use their hardware. As there is a .tsi map for the SX2 I could switch between each software whereas you can’t use Serato on Traktor controllers (not to my knowledge anyway, probably need to do some hacking).

    Best Regards,
    Chris

    Thanks everyone, at I haven’t put a ssd i’ll be doing that soon, regarding the ddj sx I know it have a lot of stuff but i’ll stick to the basics and work from there, what i like about it is that it got that cdj feel, but yea I understand your point @djvintage .
    On the monitor side I’m kind of undecided because yea its going to be my room setup, but I want something that’s going to work if get the chance to play for some people.
    Those jbl’s look pretty nice and the price is not bad , that’s around my budget

    Please do consider that monitor speakers are not designed for parties/events. Perhaps they would be ok in a small venue like a house party but they are generally not designed to be transported around and played at high volume for long/extended periods and may cause damage to them. That is what loud speakers/PA speakers are built for 🙂
