While not having direct experience with it, I do understand the technical details enough to say – if you are using Traktor, then you probably want a Traktor controller.

I’m going to get a little technical… Traktor controllers do not work via MIDI, but instead something called “HID.” HID is basically just USB. It might seem as if other controllers are also USB, but they are MIDI devices under the hood, and as such constrained by the limits of MIDI – a much older standard with stricter limitations. As a result of this, the amount of latency (the time it takes for you to push a button or, more importantly, scratch a jogwheel) is higher with MIDI than it is with HID.

So, if you use Traktor, a Traktor controller will always perform better than a non-Traktor controller (with the exception of the few non-NI HID controllers that work with Traktor). However, depending on your skill level, this may have no bearing on you. It is of most importance to folks who want to scratch, for which Traktor is generally not the go-to choice. Soooo, a MIDI controller will still introduce a potentially noticeable lag if your ear is good enough.

I hope this information has at least helped you to understand what the decision you’re making really is, and that you can make an informed decision now.

Rule of thumb here, use Traktor controllers for Traktor and don’t use Traktor controllers for other DJ Software. So the question is, what kind of software are you looking for.

@DJ Vintage: I’m aware of that rule 😛 I’m going for Traktor software. But still the jockey 3 remix is a traktor controller.

@deathy: Thanks for your answer. I’m not going to use the controller for scratching, if that’s case. S2 jogwheels are too small anyway hehe. Do you think the latency will still be noticable with other functions? Like cue or play/pause?

    Hi Nikos,

It is advertised as such, haven’t had much time to try it out, not in the least since I stopped using Traktor 2 years ago or so. What is clear is that Traktor is moving fast in the direction of being a hardware/software married couple. Anything without the NI logo won’t work, work less or at the very least won’t be actively support by Traktor. And increasingly so. Since none of knows how far Traktor is gonna take this, I’d be a little afraid of the combo. I have seen other previously Traktor supported devices take a dive in the last couple of years as far as their integration with the software goes.

You can scratch on S2 jogwheels without a problem. And on even smaller jogs, so that not need to be a deterrent :-).

As for latency, when I manually cue, I like the response to be immediate. Fair chance you will notice the latency of the jogs in that respect too.
