Yeeaaahh that’s a really nice bass sound! Nice work!

I’ve just been listening on cheap headphones (at work), but the drums seem a little lost in the mix.
Have you got the kick and snare sidechained against your bass sounds so they can cut through the mix better?
I find that an absolute necessity when working with those big dominating bass sounds.

Great to see some ghetto funk getting some love! 🙂 Keep it up!

Thanks, appreciate it! Friended you back on Soundcloud, will check it out in the mornin’.

I do have the kick and snare sidechained, but only to a bass cut rather than a full pumping compressor… not real sure it’s working well enough for me – but I can tell you this, it’s clear on a sub. heh. I may experiment with expanding the band of the bass cut, as I would like to not do a complete cut of the bass if at all possible.

Thanks for listening and the feedback, appreciate it!

Sorry, just saw your reply 🙂
    Thanks for the follow-back.

Yeah, I think the problem with just doing a bass-band sidechain is that it makes it difficult for the kick transient to come through. And that transient is pretty important! I’d experiment doing a full-spectrum sidechain, or also do a sidechain at the frequency of the transient. Remember it can have a very quick release, so it shouldn’t affect your big bass sound too much.

    Working on any more tracks?

Yeah, got a new track that I am close to done with… Ghetto Swing this time, real happy with it. I expect I’ll be releasing it next week.

I’m really not succeeding in anything that is full spectrum that doesn’t completely ruin the bass – I tried with my current track, and in the end, I instead just expanded the range of the low band cut… it sounds horrible any other way, unfortunately. I may have to start paying closer attention to where the bass is actually at, musically, and start making room for the drums that way, ’cause sidechain compression just doesn’t sound good in my mixes… maybe if I compose in such a way that the bass is just not present when the kick is.

I’ll try to do it with a limited higher band to get the transient and see if that helps. I do already have a very quick release, but it still is just too pumping.

    Something to work on.

Yeah, keeping the bass away from the kick is pretty common in bassy tracks.
    That’s good thinking.

Oh ghetto swing sounds fun, I like that too – I’ll look out for it!
