Moderator1) Easy (and most likely cheaper) to get a “regular disk” version and swap it yourself. That way you can get a 512 in there. And if 512 doesn’t hold your entire collection, you are in trouble. Not because of the lack of space, but because of the amount of music LOL. I am currently rebuilding my core collection. Limit is between 1.200 and 1.500 tracks. Anything over that goes on my removable hard disk that holds my other 40k+ request tracks. I don’t let them into iTunes or my DJ software anymore. Works like a charm.
2) The way OSX treats files (including music) is different from the way windows does. It can be done the way you suggest, but I’d suggest doing the work on your MBP and keeping it there (get a time machine while you are at it for that ever important backup). Alternatively (my current workflow) is that I download tracks on my PC, fixed it up so the filename is to my liking and such, make a copy of the original in my “Originals Vault” on my NAS (network disk). Then I do my prep work, Platinum Notes, Mixed in Key, a tag editor (I use Tag&Rename but there are plenty of other good ones) and I fix the cover art if possible. Then I move the files to a shared folder on my NAS. I access the NAS folder from my MBP and import the new tracks into iTunes (set to make a local copy in the iTunes folder). Once imported, I delete the contents of the shared folder.
This leaves me with correctly prepped tracks in iTunes and ready for import in DJ software (and further prepping: waveforms, cues, loops, etc.) and the original (high quality MP3 or lossless) track.
Hope that helps some

Participant1. I have a 256 gb drive. It doesn’t hold all of my music. For that I use a 2 tb portable hard drive. Id I were to buy a new mac tomorrow, I’d go with the bigger drive.
2. Depends on how you organize your music. I organize all of my music into folders and then load those folders into whichever program I’m using. I download music on my mac and DJ from my mac at home and as a mobile DJ, and also DJ from a pc where I work, plus have another PC set up should things crash. This way allows me to go from mac to pc back to mac if i have to.

ParticipantThat’s awesome info! Thanks both!!
Just a couple of questions.
I haven’t had a mac before so bear with me…..
If I use an external hard drive, could I still use my PC to download tracks then transfer them to the macbook? That way I can use my PC as my full library, the external hard drive as a back up and the mac will just have the “current music” that I am playing at the time. I don’t need to have all my tracks as I won’t be doing any request based sets.
However, I have heard there are issues with getting a PC and a mac to read the same hard drive? (The reason I like to have all my music on my PC aswell is that is what is connected up at home to the TV / hi-fi speakers e.t.c.)

ModeratorGeneral tendency here that you should keep your “home collection” and your DJ collection totally separate.
I do transfer stuff between my Mac and my PC but usually only once to import it into iTunes on my Mac, usually over the network. If I hook up my Mac external hard disk, I often have problems when I hook it up to my PC. It’s not the most easy thing (even with some tools on the PC that supposedly smooth the Mac disk on windows PC thing.

ParticipantI have no problem with various hard drives and flash drives going between systems. You just have to format the drives correctly. Both mac and pc can read and write to FAT32. Mac can’t read NTFS and PC can’t read “journaled” drives from a mac. In my experience, most drives come correctly formatted.

ParticipantThanks again for the replies!!
Come to think of it, if I am strict on my collection and don’t let it get too big I’m sure a 256GB hard drive will be big enough. I will only be using it for music as I will use my desktop PC to store photos, do work and other stuff on.
Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I will get a macbook sorted over the next few months then!!!

ModeratorWell, I am working hard towards the point where I can keep my entire core collection in 12-20GB. That will fit on USB-sticks, my iPhone, my iPad and obviously even on a 64GB SSD 😀
