I would stay away from Windows 8 in the short term. New operating systems always have teething problems – particularly when it comes to audio for some reason. You find you get lots of drop outs or crashes.

That being said, consider things like screen size or the weight of the laptop if you have to carry it around. I reckon almost any laptop you buy now will be up to the job. New hardware (even budget stuff) is more than up to the demands of DJing software.

    Upgrade to a Mac ….
No drivers to hassle with, stable platform, takes a beating….
There is a reason why most music professionals use them.

Ha ha I was going to say that but thought I would steer clear of the Mac vs PC debate.

I’ve used both for DJing / music production and can vouch for the fact that Macs are just easier to use.

My crappy Acer laptop, 2009 vintage, still runs traktor with no problems at all. Macs are nice, expensive for what they do though and I’ve yet to see Mac do anything a PC can’t. Work out your budget and factor things in like weight and build quality, you will be gigging with after all. As the learned gentleman above pointed out, leave Windows 8 in the mid term at least, Win7 is plenty good enough and we all know it works. I too am in the market for a new lappy, currently assessing refurbished stuff on eBay. The only must have I would say is RAM, 4gigs of it is the minimum I’d have.
    Good luck 🙂

    Cheers for this guys.

Rob I was thinking of the article I mentioned when you said about the PC/MAC debate haha http://goo.gl/gIdF3

Its the fact I have never really used an Apple which is making me wary of going for one although from what I’ve heard I would love it. Just not sure I have the patience to learn a new operating system at this stage Terry.

And Stazbumpa, I see you mention Windows 7 but funnily enough I have never used that either as my laptop has always run on Vista. This is why I was asking whether or not to jump straight onto Windows 8 rather than starting out on Windows 7 at this stage?

    Cheers again lads.

Get a copy of windows 7 install it on to the Dell Inspiron 1525 and see how it runs. 4 years (IMO) is not very old Unless your looking to get a faster laptop then ignore what i said.

Yes, get Win7. I ran Vista for ages because it was pre-installed, got annoyed with it so wiped the hard drive and stuck Win7 on it and it runs so much better. Replacing your HDD for an SSD is also another way to extend your laptop life without forking out for a new one. The only reason I’m after an upgrade myself is because I want higher screen resolution, otherwise I’d buy a decent SSD and that’s my laptop sorted bar me dropping it or something.

Be aware that your drive format may need a plugin to work on a Mac or you will have read only access. The additional cost of a Mac puts me off as most Windows laptops are easily capable of running DJ software.
When my last laptop died, the hd drive went, I had to purchase one qucikly so bought a Dell Studio 15. I stripped out all the extras diable any unwanted hardware so it’s configured to be used strictly for DJing and music. I then repaired the old one by replacing the drive and that’s used as the general internet horse.
If your looking for a dedicated DJ windows Laptop rather than an everyday work horse you can have them pre-configured for audio, custom built or configure it yourself (there are guides on Youtube) Illuminated keyboards help. I’d certainly go for as much RAM possible 2Gb minimum, prerably 4Gb to 8Gb (as above stay away from Win8 for now). As you’re running external HDDs the in built one may not matter but SSDs are the way to go.Like you I have a large collection, just under 2Tb but to be honest I could carry off any mobile gig playing music for all ages and taste with 50Gb to 100Gb of music and if I was doing a 4hr club set I’d use a 64Gb flash drive.

You’ve either got a lot of WAV’s or enough Mp3 music to play back to back for well over a year : )

    Hey Si,

Unfortunately financial restraints mean that I won’t be able to have the laptop just dedicated to the dj’ing so I’ll be doing other stuff on it. Not much else bar editing on adobe for work and using internet but it would probably make a difference I suppose.

I’d definitely like to have an illuminated keyboard like you suggested but don’t know enough about the SSDs as of yet bar what was mentioned in the article I posted earlier from last years website. The info didn’t seem to tipping the balance in any way back then so have things moved on?

And yes I could easily get away with most of my sets on smaller drives but I just have an OCD thing going on with collecting everything hahaha! I’m trying to get every UK single since charts began just for my personal collection but some of its professional as I have had the odd programme controller calling me to give them a track they haven’t got in their station believe it or not! And for the radio stuff I do have to boost many tracks to WAV which as you mention takes up more room.

Cheers for all this feedback guys……Helps that I don’t have to wait for Windows 8 to buy after all of you have said I don’t need it.

After 25 years in the wonderful world of the computers few weeks ago I’ve got a Macbookpro.
Honestly bigger anti-apple person than me is hard to find but when I decided that I’m gonna move away from my desktop and make a dj stand and everything, I said “why not go on a huge trip at the same time?”.
25 years with DOS and Win…..25 years as computer programmer and tech……I am ashamed to say but hell I needed to google how the ***** find programs I’ve installed on this mac. It wasnt fun to be next to me for a few days cause I had a bad temper. 🙂
1 thing for sure: I can make things on this laptop that I cant on my desktop. Having my session broadcasted through camtwist to webpage, at the same time broadcasting the audio to a web radio and having 3 other programs open to send the metadata to twitter and the shoutcast server, recording the video in quicktime and recording the audio in traktor……and the cpu meter in traktor not even moves a milimeter (for US ppl…..milimeter is very-very little). My dekstop would have gone on strike since long time ago.
I still hate apple but I’m getting used to this laptop at least.
PS: if you switch to mac…dont be scared when things you take granted in windows actually cannot be done on mac without installing a program for it!
Ah and my Microsoft Lifecam works better with mac than a mac certified web cam….wonderful world of logic…isnt it? 🙂

You can set up a Laptop to dual boot so you one login for general use and one the is configured for DJing

I am so bloody temted on the mac’s Erik but even just reading your post scares the shi*e out of me! I get constantly frustrated on laptops which I know how to use so the thought of being out of my comfort zone all together on a mac is freaking me out!

Never thought about the dual boot Si so cheers for that….Is that a case of just having two different users set up?

I have been using Win 7 since its beta came out and i’m still to see a BSOD, which was not forced by me. I agree that windows had its issues in the past but come on… today it is plenty good and stable enough to run a DJ software.

Just make sure when you install a new program you only install it for the user you need to.

Dual boot is like having 2 laptops in 1 you can Win/Win, Win/Mac, Win/Linux
