KeymasterHi Amp
The NDX800 is apparently natively supported in Virtual DJ so you could download Virtual DJ Home and try it out (you get 10 minutes before it reverts to mouse/keyboard operation, you then need to restart the software – buying the full version unlocks this). You’d plug both NDX’s into your laptop. You can use the DJ i/o as your soundcard – you plug the two outputs from it into separate channels fo your mixer. Then you’re using Virtual DJ as music library/transport, but not as a mixer or for EQing, as you’re getting those functions from your external mixer. You could look fot Traktor mappings but I’m not aware of them.
Macs are more reliable in the real world – a good thing for DJs – and aren’t as fiddly with drivers etc for music use, but you can use a PC laptop fine.
Ableton Live is the most popular DJ/producer software because it is most DJ-centric. Any keyboard is fine, you can get a cheap M-Audio Midi keyboard for very little. It’s only for entering ideas – I wouldn’t even bother if it were me. You can get away with your laptop’s keyboard at first.
We are the best place for beginner DJ advice; for production you can try sites like Audiotuts+, or Rick Snowman’s legendary Dance Music Manual.

ParticipantHey there Phil, I found this website by sheer coincidence, and honestly I’m loving it, I’ve already gone back to around August in your articles. So keep up the great work! 😀
Thanks for the advice! I think I’m gonna go with Traktor for the software because I just found the mappings on the Numark site! I called and they said they would send me a Traktor LE disk since when I bought it they don’t come with it and now they do. Now that I’m gonna get this for free, I would still like to ask which version of Traktor do u think would suit me best with my current setup. (I’m also considering getting some vinyl turntables so I can learn some classic scratching)
I’m gonna try the free trial for Ableton live, this weekend, along with the sites you mentioned. So I appreciate the help!Again, Many thanks for the advice,

ParticipantFor sure as soon as I start! 😀 But before I buy this I actually think I need to buy real speakers. I’m currently using a set of Logitech 5.1 speakers, the 150w ones I think. But I think I should get some real speakers, what would u guys recommend?

MemberIf you are planning to focus on DJing then you don’t really need to splash out on expensive monitors (studio speakers). Despite the fear of raising angry disagreements I would go far enough to say that your logitech speakers are fine for DJ practising in your bedroom.
If however you are planning to produce your own music, things get much more complicated. There is a huuuuge market (and budgets) for studio monitors and NOBODY, absolutely NOBODY can tell you what the best monitor is: and the reason is that even if I suggest to you a pair of monitors in the price range of 6.000 euros, there will always be someone suggesting a better monitor (probably costing twice as much). Soooo, coming down to earth, I’d say from my own personal experience that in order to get a pair of – at least – decent monitors prepare for a budget of 500 – 600 euros, (typical price range of 8 inch active monitors from known manufacturers’ low-budget monitors). Again, my perosnal opinion is that these are required ONLY if you are planning to compose, synthesize and create your own music.October 20, 2011 at 12:23 pm #1001933Angel Perez
ParticipantThx a lot for the advice softcore 😀 I am planning to produce in the future so I guess I should get a couple of monitors. I was thinking to get these: http://amzn.to/pRexZI
Since all the reviews I see say that they perform way above their price range and their just about the right price and size for me 🙂 Considering I’d love to build myself one of these: http://bit.ly/oBCL4bOctober 20, 2011 at 12:27 pm #8783mr stifffy
MemberI use headphones when I produce as I do a lot outside of the studio but thats just me… windows v mac is all down to you… Ive used macs but prefare my windows now the windows 7 is a lot more stable and a lot more plug and play friendly. if you are one of these people thatd download loads of shit and go on bad sites (porn, torrent sites) I recommend mac since they are a bit better at handling this (viruses are getting more common on macs though). if you are sensible with what you do though (basic web use and mainly music) I recommend windows since for half the price you can pick up something twice as powerfull as the basic mac model. Im running a samsung rv511 at the moment which was half the price of the crapist mac model and came standard with 6gb ram, 640gb hd, I5, windows 7, real good sound and video card and a few other nice treats ;).
for software its all down to preference… for edm I recommend fl studio for anything else ableton seems to be the go to software but has a steep learning curve and price curve.

ParticipantSweet! I use windows now, and yes I’m very sensitive with what I see and download on the net. So I guess I’ll go with windows. I’m very happy with my current laptop for everyday use, but its already 3 years old. Hence, I’d love to get a better/newer laptop and maybe turn this one into a server. xD
I used FL studio for a while in high school, but it was still only for two or three months so I barely remember what I did 😛 I’ll try both free trials and see which one I feel more comfortable with. Thanks for the advice!October 20, 2011 at 12:52 pm #8788mr stifffy
Memberthats good then, if you have any questions feel free to ask, for composing house music all I use is my headphones, a small korg controller and fl studio

I use windows as well, and haven’t had any issues. I do dual boot, with one OS for daily use and the other that has Traktor, and various other software for music manipulation. Makes it faster and much more stable.

Nice! Sounds like an awesome solution, I’ll try and do that…

I started djing around 6 months ago, and took full advantage of my summer vacation from college to hone my skills :p Now there’s some things I’d like to ask and this seemed like the best place to ask. 🙂
My gear consists of 2 ndx800s and a Numark x6 mixer. I’ve been thinking about starting to use a computer software and I’d like to know what you all think would be the best one to use with my gear. I use PC, so I believe I would need a sound card so please let me know if the DJ I/O would suffice. Also, I’ve been considering getting a mac so let me know what you think the DJ-specific advantages of MAC are. 🙂
Also, I’ve been thinking about going into production after reading the article on it on the blog. I’d love to know what I would need to get started. I’m guessing a MIDI keyboard would come first, followed by software and idk what else. Please let me know what you think would be the best bang for the buck would be for the keyboard, and as for the software, what you think would be the best.
Finally, any good tutorials for starting to produce would be great! Many Thanks in advance
Dude MAc is awesome …!! Use it for your djing and try to be unique among crowd. My suggestion is that read crowd’s reaction during music plays . It will give you idea which music people like most and which does not
