ModeratorUnless you are dead set on a modular setup, I would serious suggest looking into an all-in-one controller. Lot less hassle :-).
You can find a good controller that combines all the x1 controls, the performance pads of the f1, a mixer function, soundcard and you get two jogwheels as a bonus. One cable to hook up.
Just my two cents.

ParticipantCheers man 🙂
I’ll look into it, the only ones i really know of are the s2 and the s4 from traktor, are there any cheaper options haha. I haven’t got that sort of money at the moment, but i guess i could save.

ParticipantThe Gemini G4V is a serious option at tbout half the price of Traktor gear with similar specs. I have been juggling this up with a few other controllers for a while and am going to buy pretty soon. Always check eBay, and more importantly, Gumtree, as you will ALWAYS find bargains.
What state are you in? There is a pretty schmick Numark 4Trak at Byron Bay for $300 O.N.O. on Gumree.

ParticipantDo both controllers link up well with Traktor Pro 2? And yeah the $300 is about my max to be honest, I would like to keep my x1 mk2, is there sense in that?

ParticipantIt looks like you are going in the modular directon. I would suggest a mixer controller first, as it is definitely more essential, but that’s the great thing about modular; it lets you grow your own way.
I find it hard to work with the X1 because it is a really odd layout but it kinda works if you have two, controlling 4 decks with a mixer in between, but that’s out of your sights now. The Behringer CMD-MM1 is a modular mixer controller that comes in at $189 at DJ City, maybe less if you look around. It isn’t Traktor brand, but I find Traktor controllers really expensive for what they are. If you are looking for a pad based controller, the Behringer CMD LC-1 and CMD DC-1 are good options, both comeing in at the same $189.
I assume all these won’t conflict with Traktor brand controllers, but don’t take my word for it.

KeymasterSorry, please do not give advise if you are still not on top of things yourself.
The Gemini controller is LIGHTYEARS away from the quality of any NI controller. Even the X1 beats it hands down.
The Behringer modular setup is even worse and I would wish that on nobody. If you are going for Traktor that I would strongly recommend saving your money and work towards an S2 or S4 Mk II.

ParticipantI’ve found the x1 great to learn with, but obviously it’s my first controller haha. What exactly do jog wheels do on a controller? I can guess, but it’s better to hear it ‘straight from the horses mouth’ I guess
How do those other modular controllers shape up against traktor controllers? At the moment I’m seeing native instruments like apple, in that their gear is more expensive, but you get that quality guarantee??

ModeratorI wouldn’t necessarily agree with the latter part. NI stuff is good, but so are some other brands. NI seem totally focussed on supporting their own hardware (really no more mappings for other stuff coming out of NI I think). That allows for good integration and minimum hassle with drivers and compatibility and such of course, but it also marries you to Traktor/NI. If a year from know you decide that the Traktor software isn’t really the thing for you (took me a year and a half to decide I needed to switch) then you are stuck with hardware that isn’t supported by many other programs (even Mixvibes, which supports a lot of controllers only does the X1).
It’s beyond the scope of this forum to go into detail on what jogwheels do, but suffice to say they allow you to scratch, manipulate a track in vinyl style, nudge and pitch bend a track, find a particular spot in a track to set a cue and other handy stuff. I can play on almost any gear, but I think I would draw the line at gear that didn’t have jogwheels personally.
Hope that answers your question somewhat.

ParticipantThanks for all your help everyone, it’s been really useful. I’ll definitely think about it all. My only remaining question is that one previously, would it make sense for me to keep the x1?
Thanks again 🙂

ParticipantI actually started with a s4 6 months ago and I’m kind of wishing that I was using modular controllers now. The s4 has everything you could want but something about the ergonomics of the modular stuff seems better as well as the layout of things being vertical is cool.
I’m totally new at this stuff so don’t be rough on me guys, but I recently downloaded and started playing with touchosc on my ipad and iphone and for like $3 you can add so many controllers. I can’t talk about lag or actually performance reliability. But since most people already own a smart phone I’d recommend playing with that and mapping some effects yourself.
I’m waiting for some b-boy to mix well he pops. Days are getting crazy.

ModeratorA big part of the equation is “do you want to play out at any time”. If the answer is yes, modular in my opinion is not the way to go. Too much hassles, too much pieces, too much cables, too much things that can go wrong hooking up.
And while at your first gigs you might not worry about spending an hour setting up, hooking up, testing … you ARE playing out after all! … but after a while all that wears off and you just want to hook up your controller and be playing.
Just my two cents.
As for the X1. You could keep it for decks 3&4. That way you’d have seperate controls for each deck. Only valuable if you plan on using all 4 of course 😀

ParticipantThanks for all your help man, it really helps having all this laid out for me. So much better than just randomly googling haha.
I’m thinking I’ll buy the s2 and keep my x1. That way i can also sell my soundcard and spare version of traktor to one of my mates as well!
Again, thank for everyone’s help ! 🙂
