Where does it peak. On the master or on one of the faders? In Traktor the main only controls what comes after the fader. If you play a track and the vu meter of that channel peaks then you should turn the gain down. If that track peaks on the channel it’s vu meterĀ evenĀ with the gain at 0, that track might be really loud. Try it with different tracks.

The gain is not a setting that you only set once. With each different track you have to adjust the gain to make sure the track does not peaks. But some tracks can be recorded really loud.

Let me know how it all works out

Shoot, looking back at my first post I realised it’s really ambiguous; something I was trying to avoid. Ah well. The problem is the Main Levels (top-right corner) peak before I can reach 0dB on my track levels. Just wondering if this is normal? Is 0dB on the track levels supposed to push it well into the orange on the main? I’m used to keeping out of the orange on my Denon mixer (let big kicks occasionally hit the orange). Is it okay to constantly be in the orange in traktor?

edit: when I adjust gain I mean to odB on the track levels not just reset gain to 0dB. I think all my songs would peak if left at 0dB on the gain, I always end up lowering the gain a bit. Sorry that wasn’t clear.

You can try to turn the main volume down. I have the main on my traktor at -1.5 dB. Peaking in the orange is fine. But try to avoid the red light.

As far as I know the main volume controls the main vu meters. So if the main is turned down, that should stop the main from hitting the orange. Even if the track levels are a bit loud.

The level/vu meters should guide you on where to set faders and knobs.. Levels start at the gain and finish at the master out. It would be nice if there was an industry standard on normalization volume of every single track and everything could be 0dB, , but there isn’t. So we as sound techs have to set gains/eq’s/faders and master volume so there is no clipping.
