MemberI’m looking into starting using a mic for recordings as well (have yet to buy a mic though), and am not the most confident person available either, but I’d say, try practicing at home. It may seem a bit silly, but try recording yourself, if you have problems with coming up what to say, write a text, or talk about something (maybe do a quick, narrated tour of your gear) and practice articulating and talking confidently.

MemberShout out drink offers, announce the program for the next few nights, tell a joke, remind the crowd of a recent sporting event, say something about the next song or the next artist you’re mixing in 🙂

MemberThats a tough one. Drink specials is a good way to go. or things like “this next one is a favorite for all” or something like “this next one is for all the single ladies” works. Or if no one is dancing and its just all ladies. call out the wall flower guys. As for the shyness, don’t sweat it. Most people barely stare at the dj when they are drinking.

Participantdo elvis impersonations in front of the mirror…no seriously.stand in front of a mirror like i did.i used a hairbrush as a mic.a lot depends on wot crowd you are playing to.you didnt specify.a dance crowd you can wing it by shouting out”in the house tonite” ala public domain.but a more demanding crowd like a wedding is not my domain as im not a mobile dj.my only suggestion is to insert little quips.i suggest you listen to judge jules.he is the king of witty dj crap.he is trance btw

ParticipantAre there still clubs that actually have DJs who get on the mic and blab in-between and/or during tunes? :O
Must be more than ten years since I last saw that! Well, except for this one sad occasion rather recently where a club had a pseudo-celebrity rockstar-turned-wannabe-DJ as a ‘headliner’ who had an MC with him, and the guy just would not shut up – he kept spewing the most clichéd slogans (“party people come on put your hands up, woot woot!”) to cover up for the fact that the ‘DJ’ kept trainwrecking every single mix. I for one found that extremely irritating, up to a point where I just had to leave to preserve what little faith I still have in humanity.
I bet I’m not alone in this, either, so… perhaps it would not be a bad idea to talk to the club owner about how this sort of thing is better left in 90’s, where it belongs.

Memberi had a similar ruff expierience… im an american and moved to the uk… i got a residency at a pub and they wanted me on the mic…which wasnt my forte… so i did my best.. i made a name drop i can play from seratos sp6 and the rest i did freestyle…drink specials upcoming events and the like… but hen parties were awesome.. it gives u an excuse to be a flirt and maybe get sum digits… it didnt hurt that i have my thick new jersey/philly accent… and being they all wanted the same songs over n over.. if someone requested party rock anthem for the 1000th time… id say if you want to hear it again it’ll cost you a jager bomb… gettin on the mic can be fun.. and essential in sum venues…. but have fun with it and you might get a lil extra bonus at the end of the night 😉

I’m kind of a shy person and normally dont do this when I spin, so can someone give me some easy lines to blurt out, and some tips to be confident on the mic?
I just talk about the people on the dancefloor and make it funny. The crowd has actually responded really well to this and waits on the edge of their seats to hear what crazy comment is coming next, Eg. (Girls skirt is WAY too short, She has NO business wearing it) I will stop the track, turn the house lights on and say…. “Sweetie in the blue panty cover, you are completely rockin’ the dancefloor and I thank you but, everytime you squat or bend over… I can see all of your roast beef!” Crowd erupts in WWOOOOAAAA!!! and the DAMMNN!!! then laughter. Of course I start laughing too. It’s all in fun and you are saying something that everyone was thinking anyway.
Be spontaneous and have fun!
