    What’s your DJ name?

Forgot to ask before hitting “Submit”

    What styles do you play?

    What are your favorite DJs?

    #2132101

DJ name is same as username. Sentri.

In regards to styles, I’ve always leaned a bit towards trance, dance, and techno (I’m still trying to figure out sub genres). Part of my scene is going to be at a local gaming convention so some of my sets will be game remixes, but if I could go without a gaming related logo so that I could use it everywhere, that’s what I’m looking for.

As for my favorite DJs, I like Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Darude (for more than just Sandstorm! LOL), Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike (I listen the their radio shows all the time at work!) That really only names a few, but they were the ones that got me into EDM and wanting to DJ.

It sounds like you need a logo similar to what the Trance DJs do. Nothing wrong with that, but more it’s on trying to nail the beginnings of your brand image.

    Let’s look at some examples:

    Trance DJ Logos

Beyond a few outliers, you notice the similarities? They all use sleek, smooth, thick, bold fonts. Many look futuristic, airy, and contemporary. W&W stands apart with their more gritty logo, and Gareth Emery changes it up with how he did his last name.

My suggestion would be to start there. Go on dafont.com and look at your name in the fonts. You can type in “Sentri” and you’ll see. Tweak and play from there. Also make sure to try “Sentri”, “sentri”, and “SENTRI”…as you might find different ideas.

Beyond that, use these as inspiration. If you’re still stuck, then talk to a student designer, or try a crowdsourcing site like 99designs.com

I would consider engaging a graphic designer, logo design is part of building your brand. A few other tips about logo design, as you’ll notice all of the fonts above are sans-serif. Serifs were added by the print industry to make it easier to read large blocks of text, however they typically aren’t used in graphic design. Furthermore we’ve seen a movement away from them because they didn’t render well on computer screens because of the low resolution monitors in the early days. This makes fonts with serifs look out of date which is not what you want for your logo.

Another thing to notice is the close spacing between the letters in the logo. Typically a graphic designer will reduce the spacing because you want to use white space to bring attention to the words. One of my instructors told me that one way to instantly tell if an ad was created by a graphic designer or a secretary is to look at the spacing of the words.

W&W and trance? Pff.. I guess you should add David Guetta to the list too.

@scott, I appreciate the advice, but I don’t know anyone in a graphic design field. I also don’t have the money to pay a graphic designer to make a logo for me.

    What about something like this?

    Sentri Logo Prototype

I’ve also come up with an idea for a small image (similar to Tiesto). I haven’t uploaded that one yet, but more or less, it’s a diamond shape with the waveform of my name going across it.

I like where you’re going. My only worry is if your font is difficult to read. If the “T” would be seen as a “T”.

If you have the means, I’d get rid of the little gaps in the letters. Make them into solid letters, but in that shape. Keep the space between letters though.

I’ve got photoshop and can vector it out when I finalize the design. I might keep the horizontal spaces (don’t want the E looking like an O) Might even change the E to make it more like an E.

I’ll post another couple of versions later (when I get back to my main PC)

I’d kill the upper space on the “e” and keep the lower one. The “r” I’d leave alone. Maybe chop out the upper-right extension on the “n”.

The “t” just confuses the eye, and I think the “s” would look good connected up.

    Sentri Prototype 2

I was thinking like this. I was thinking the same thing as your suggestion.

    Sentri image 1

Here’s the image that I was going to place next to my name.

For what it’s worth, my opinion:

Pick a font you like and run with it nothing to complicated. Some of the logos/names I love are where you take the characteristics of one letter and add that to make your logo.

Check out people Like Andy C, Skrillex for what I mean.

The Skrillex one I really enjoy, If you find some pictures of his latest stage set-up you’ll see the “ill” of his name becomes the forefront of his spaceship. So simple, yet so recognisable. Absolutely no over kill but it gives him a major marketing identity and makes his name a brand.

Hope this ramble a) makes sense b) gives you some ideas 🙂

    Dom,

I’ve actually thought about that, but with the origins of my name, that’s where I fear that I tread on borderline copyright infringement. the 2 ideas I had are both derived from a ‘sentry’ that has a very distinct look to it.

I googled it to see what I could use and literally EVERYTHING that came up was from either Team Fortress 2 and Portal, and I fear that’s treading on thin water.

I don’t know the gaming scene that well in all honesty so couldn’t honestly advise, but there’s a difference between stealing something copyright and taking inspiration from it. What i think may look unique/cool is taking the single shape on the e and changing the colour of it to your favorite colour. Creates a focal point and a unique logo that, people will recongnise to be you if they know you. Maybe even flip it 90 degrees so its just a diamond?

Love the text on how you have your name now.

Not a fan of the waveform diamond.
