    Hi. Im 15 and im just getting into djing and im living it, I believe you should definitely give your son a chance. I just bought my first controller the Numark Mixtrack Pro 3 (250$)and ive been spending a lot of time mostly due to my love of music. If you think your son has the determination and love required for it you should give him a chance, maybe check out different Dj equipment and see your price range. While making my research into what controller I should buy I came across various cheap entry level controllers that might intrest you (Numark Mixtrack Pro, Hercules DJ 4780730 Control Instinct, Numark DJ 2 Go etc) Hope this helped. 🙂

    Arturo – so cool of you to do some initial legwork for your son! You’ve definitely come to the right place.

    I am very satisfied with the DJay2 app for iPad/iPhone. The app has everything the beginning DJ needs for about $5 U.S.

    I bought a Traktor Kontrol S2 DJ console last year for about $400 but had many issues with Native Instrument’s software and was never able to use it after troubleshooting for several months. I would not recommend N.I. products due to the abysmal customer service experience and extremely slow response time to correspondence. That was my personal experience. I am sure there are others here who absolutely love their products. To each his own.

    I also got a pair of V Moda headsets and absolutely love them. Listening through these really makes a difference.

    Best of luck to you and your son!

    Cheers,

    I have traktor control S4. I’m no teenager but this is my first DJ package I have bought to get started. They are great and I believe traktor to be the front runner for DJing.

    I like the s4 controller as it shows you on the hardware all the things needed to get familiar with terms and functions needed for DJing. I have not tried the S2 but I assume it is only for 2 decks so even easier to get started.

    @Mark: Good thing you have found what you are looking for in Traktor and your belief they are front runners. They are definitively a creative and innovative bunch (remix decks, stems, no jog wheel controllers). They are also increasingly NI/Traktor only gear supported. For several reasons that makes them very suited for a part of the DJ community and quite unsuited for the rest. In general the choice for DJ software boils down to which suits your workflow and style of DJ-ing best. The big names, next to Traktor, being Serato, Virtual DJ, Mixvibes Cross and of course late arrival RekordBox DJ. Any of those will give you very workable, professional tools for DJ-ing.

    @Chemtrail: Various people various experiences. I’ll grant that I had a not so happy run-in with Traktor when I sold my controller that came with an LE version of Traktor (and I had to include that license to stay with controller) which rendered my full license upgrade useless and the only answer NI came up with was to by a new full license! Not very friendly. Would have been easier if they had offered a free or small fee transition of my full license upgrade to a full license.
    Having said that, I also know many DJs that are very happy with both gear and software and have played for many years with it.

    @Arturo
    : Smart for giving your son the option of trying it out without breaking the bank. My advice would be to read up on a few of the “looking for a new or starter controller” posts (use the search field). You will find plenty that will give you an idea how to go about picking software and gear. There will usually be a list of our preferred starter controllers.

    With the advent of more and better iOS DJ software, that is becoming more of an option when paired with a compatible controller. Those are still fewer and further in between than regular midi-controllers that depend on using a laptop with DJ software.

    I wouldn’t discount buying used gear either. Depending on where you are in the world, there may be a rather enthusiastic second hand market.
