Never any criticism on here! We are such sweeties … lol!

Seriously though. I am not a big fan of modular, but … there are situations when it can come in handy. Adding functionality to a club setup in an already crowded DJ booth could be such a situation. Just the Z1 with an iPad is also a good reason. Nice “fit in your suitcase” holiday solution, just add two active 15″ PA speakers in your other suitcase and you are good to go (sorry, couldn’t resist).

Using a 2-channel mixer (the Z1) for any 4-deck situation is not gonna be terribly handy though. The same goes for hooking stuff up in that DJ booth we mentioned. You will need some way to get the sound out of your laptop and into the DJM900. The DJM will allow you to hook-up up to 4 USB channels as well. So that might be your solution there, provided you have time to set it up right in your software once and save that set up. Any other (non-USB) mixer and you will need an external soundcard.

There are a lot of factors here and where I can see some of the modular gear be very helpful as an addition to a club setup, it may just turn out to be less than optimal for home practice situations.

Hope some of our other readers can shed another/different light on this.

    I totally agree with Chuck.

Also no jogwheels, no real pitchfaders (I love longer high res pitch faders) etc. etc. etc.

It would be WAY too much  hassle for me.

Also I have yet to find a club where I could not simply setup my Terminal Mix and that is way bigger than a Mixage. Yes it can get cramped sometimes in the DJ booth and but most of the time it is more work to fiddle my crane laptop stand in there with all the cabling going on than setting up the Terminal Mix.

Why this is the case is also simple: Most (I would say 99%) DJ boths still have an area beside the CDJs that were ment for big CD carry cases that will fit most controllers up to Terminal Mix / S4 /VCI400 sizes nicely and in about 70-80% of them you can even fit an NS7…

    Thanks for the answers!

My point here is not so much to discuss the (dis)advantages of modular setups. I do see a lot more advantages than disadvantages for my specific use-case and am quite sure I want to go down that route. I am quite sure I want to use an X1 as a cheap, light, yet reliable and handy way to control Traktor. I am also sure that I want to use my Launchpad for the remix decks. I have heard enough success-stories of people using the same kind of setup live to know it can work well!

Now the real question is: is it reasonable to buy just a Z1 as a cheap 2 channel mixer for the two track decks, and use the mapping on the Launchpad to control the Remix decks volumes?

If I do assume a Z1 is fine for now, I am also limited about the clubs I can mix in, since I need a DJM900 or other Traktor-ready mixer with integrated Audio interface! A solution to that issue would be to have an Audio card like the Audio 8, and I can buy that only when (if) I ever need it. Does that feel reasonable?

If I don’t want to assume that a Z1 is fine for now, what is a good cheap 4 channels mixer I could get to train at home? All I need is 4 channels with EQ knobs/Filter knob/Volume faders, nothing fancy. Or is there a cheap 4 channel mixer that is Traktor-ready? Like a kind of Traktor Kontrol Z4 😛

What about the Behringer DJX900 USB?
