ParticipantI’m using Mixxx for a sh**load of reasons, here’s some of them.
- It was the first DJ software i ever tried, that was long before i bought my crappy first controller. I instantly fell in love with its simplicity and although at first it lacked some features that might be important for EDM-DJs, it already had everything on board i needed as a rock DJ.
- I saw the software mature and got used to it.
- It’s ressource-friendly and works well on older hardware.
- Its community provides great technical support.
- The rewritten library still has some rough edges, but it gets more and more powerful and with time it might become the most flexible thing out there.
- Midi-scripting is an extremely powerful tool and offers endless possibilities for your midi mappings, not very beginner friendly though.
- It runs on linux (afaik no other software does), and with a linux-typical stability* that will make even the most devoted apple-fanatic jealous.
- Of course it also runs on Windows and Mac.
- It’s free.
- It’s open source.
If i had to go with one of the big three commercial softwares, i guess i’d be in the serato-camp for it’s focused and distraction-free approach.
*I have to admit that Mixxx actually crashed once in my lifetime. Most likely it wasn’t the software’s fault, though. It was at an outdoor event and the diesel generator ran out of fuel. When electricity came back the software took a sh** and died. As far as i can guess, my midi controller didn’t handle the switch to usb power so well and my laptop lost the usb connection. From that day i learned a new mantra: Always reboot your gear after a power failure.
It was the only time Mixxx had ever failed me.October 2, 2012 at 3:21 pm #1012936squeeam
ParticipantMy third post on this subject now and I’ve gone back to Traktor. Reason? I won a Traktor S4 with Traktor Pro AND two Stanton ST150 turntables (please don’t hate me).
When I used Traktor LE with my Numark Mixtrak Pro I found it quite limiting and so went with Serato LE. It literally is plug and play. I think someone else mentioned learning visually and that is what Serato helps you do (I know, I know, we should use our ears but when you’ve got a wife and family they don’t always appreciate your audible “train wrecks” echoing throughout the house). We are having a change around in our house so I will virtually have my own room to play in and will be able to practice more playing by ear.
In the limited time I’ve had the S4 I’ve found it to be a phenomenal piece of kit. The possibilities are endless. And having Traktor Pro as well has made life easier than with the LE version.
And one final thing. I have honestly never won anything in my life and it always happened to “other people”. Well now I am “other people” so keep entering competitions or filling out surveys for prizes and it just might be you who gets selected.October 2, 2012 at 7:13 pm #1012948Anonymous
Inactive…I’m trying to learn every possible HW and SW DJ system, just in case I suddenly need to use an unexpected setup…

MemberI use Traktor Pro 2 because it challenged me. I started out with VDJ years ago because, no offense to anyone currently using it, but it was so easy a monkey could use it. I found it almost too convenient and it made me presume I knew a lot because everything was laid out for me. VDJ made me lazy. That, and quite frankly, every joe schmo on my local bar circuit is using it and I wanted to try something different.
Traktor appeared to me as more stripped down, definitely not as “warm and cuddly” as VDJ. It was a challenge and I love that….almost as much as I fear it. I almost ran screaming back to VDJ because, heaven forbid, Traktor made me figure the stuff out for myself. Now I couldn’t imagine playing with anything else for my current skill level.
Talk to me in a year and perhaps I’ll be singing the praises of Serrato and timecodes, if that’s where my evolution takes me so be it. Right now Traktor kicks my ass just enough to keep my nights interesting.

That’s pretty sweet. I knew I should have filled out that survey from that other site.
Are you planning on using the turntables with your S4? That would be a pretty sweet DVS setup.
As for me, I just started using Traktor again as well. As a Traktor-then-VDJ-then-Torq-then-VDJ-then-djay-then-VDJ user I recently bought Traktor 2.5 to use with my new Stanton SCS.1 setup. I still prefer VDJ as a program, but the mapping for the SCS.1 just isn’t tight enough for my liking. I’ve been impressed so far with how far Traktor has come since I last used it, though.

Err, believe it or not I’m not that interested in the turntables. I will probably (hopefully) sell them to someone who could make good use of them. I am more into controllerism (still feel icky saying that, a bit like “EDM”). Also they are absolute monsters, weighing 16kg each.
I’m going to BPM in Birmingham, England this weekend which is a big DJ equipment exhibition so I’m hoping I bump into someone there who could take them off my hands.December 11, 2012 at 1:23 pm #33452iztik21
ParticipantMy DJ software is Serato DJ, and this is why: Having the glitch to test different DJ Softwares although on my gigs, I always have Virtual DJ as my backup. I am currently practicing on Traktor Pro 2 as well. So whenever I visit some of my DJ friends, and didn’t bring my Gig Machine, I am able to play on any dj software available. 😀

ParticipantMy DJ software is Traktor because I view myself as an instrumentalist-in-addition-to-crowdpleaser. I feel the variety of different effects chains available is great for giving unexpected-but-smooth transitions into songs that can act as a signature and really bring out the performance aspect of DJing.

ParticipantMy day job, I design and test user interfaces for web, apps and software. So I’m very picky about how an application is designed. My first controller was the Herc RMX with VDJ. And that was my first exposure to DJ software. After reading many positive reviews I couldn’t believe how bad the software was. It was like a complete hack. If I have a controller why was I using a mouse or trackpad to operate the software? Made no sense. I gave my friend’s turntable setup with Serato a whirl. But I wasn’t happy with that either. I traded my gear and bought the S4. It took me no time to learn it. I found the UI to most user friendly. I love the visual display and the integration with iTunes. My main pet peeve with Traktor is working in its settings and prefs. What hell to find anything in there!!

ParticipantMy DJ Software is Serato DJ Intro, and that’s cos I got the software with my Denon MC2000. I would like to try out other software but not necessarily pay for it, yet. And I’m wondering if there’s a way to do this?
Oh, Serato seems to crash my machine and it crashed already as well.
I’m currently running the software on an iMac Quad Core, etc etc… so shouldn’t have done that 🙁

ParticipantI use DJay 4.0 on my MacBook, no controller. With the new feature of key analysis and a bit of reading of “Beyond Beatmatching”, it suits my needs for now, which basically includes: impressing my wife and daughter, making electro/ tech-house mixes to jam in the car on the way to work. I downloaded free versions of VDJ, Traktor Demo, and Serato DJ Intro. I like how VDJ has the superimposed waveforms, Serato is useless without a controller (kind of dumb on their part as a consumer giving it a go can’t even play around a bit), and started beat gridding in Traktor last night. Okay, Traktor people, I get it. It looks polished, and I see how the gridding can lend to super tight mixing. From what I gather, this can be accomplished in Serato as well. Still, it seems with the release of DJay 4, that Algoriddum is gaining fast. Perhaps with another update or two, some higher end controller integration, and easier access to manipulating the mixer, DJay may throw a more serious hat into the ring. For now, I will continue with DJay, but must admit, Trakto has piqued my interest. I guess if the S2/S4 didn’t seem so…..plasticy, I would jump. For now I will wait. I know, Vestax-400 can be mapped, etc…..i’m not sure I’m ready for all that. I just want to jam. I have a full-time family and career as a physician. If you’re new like me, read “How to DJ Right” and “Beyond Beatmatching”. These books really helped me get started. Of course, I’m tearing through Phil’s video course right now and absorbing more information all the time. Basically, DJay for now, and on my Mac, the iOS versions seem to be falling behind. But, I’m open to the other big guns. Time will tell. Personally, the DDJ-SX looks amazing, but I’m turned off by Serato’s lack of useable free software, and the first version of anything has lots of kinks to work out. Wanna bet there is a DDJ-TX around the corner?
