What’s the age group and ethnic/racial makeup?

Ethnic/racial makeup is majority African American. Age range is 18 – 60 years old. I know there are some Funk/Disco classics that will probably get the 35 and over crowd going, but if you have surefire recommendations I’ll be sure to add them to the playlist and build on it from there.

The funk/disco stuff was going to be my suggestion. Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, Commodores, etc.

i would ask the people who im djing for what would people like to hear….(I WOULD BE ASKING THEM NOW!!!!!) to have an idea whats going on…..it works for me all the time…u can use the cupid shuffle, the different cha-cha slides, a little atlantic starr, evelyn champainge king, barry white, michael jackson, luther vandross, teddy pendergrass, etc. for the older and yet alot of yung folks like that too! when they get drunk enough 9/10 times they will ask u to get crunk for them so get a playlist of crunk music aka, some future, 2 chainz, rihanna etc.

I’ve done a few parties for friends, and generally I make a post on facebook or ask directly for song suggestions. For a 3hr party I ask for about 100 songs and from that, I pack my crate (along with at least 30min of tracks that I want to play and feel will make people dance.)

A lot of the tracks end up not being used, but the larger your request list, the more chance you have of picking tracks that both you and your crowd will like to hear.

2 Pac’s track “old school”, Intergalactic, Queen Latifah’s UNITY, almost anything by LL Cool J (the ladies really love him), De La Soul or A Tribe Called Quest have never failed me.

Thanks for the run down, dubc. I’m in the Atlanta Metro area which has a various assortment of transients from all over the country living here. I have noticed that the Detroit/Midwest stepping scene doesn’t seem too big here in the “A”, but if there are any folks from Chicago, Detroit, etc. in the building they would really enjoy stepping.

In any event, I have songs from the artists you mentioned so I’m on track.

Yeah I know the last 3 are reggae but the are fast enough that you can incorporate them into a hip hop set. EVERYBODY knows the melodies to them and women love dancing to them.
That should help lead you to other tunes and help trigger some memories

Not suited for club play, but the best song ever when I was young and in my room with a girl … Luther Vandross’ rendering of “Just The Way You Are”. Why impress a girl when you can have Luther do it for you :-).
