MemberModular is cool – but is a bit more hassle in setting up. Lots of USB cables, USB hubs, etc.
Modular certainly gives you more freedom.

KeymasterThe Behringer controllers aren’t out yet, bear that in mind…

ParticipantIf you are going to go modular, I’d suggest getting a hardware mixer, as that really is one of the main advantages of modular.

Agreed. I’m definitely going to replace my Xponent with the new CMD modules. I do wonder if the delay is perhaps them trying to tweak the CMD DC-1 to maybe control Traktor Remix Decks like the F-1. That would be sweet.
What I personally like about the idea of modular is you can expand or compress your setup based on your needs. Go as simply as one jogwheel and the mixer, or combine loads to make a bigger one. It gives you flexibility.

That is entirely a personal decision based on what you want to spend and what you want to do with it. Some features to look for: good vu’s on each channel (I miss this most when I’m using my all-in-one unit), good soundcard that is compatible with your software of choice (unless you want to go really modular and have this separate too), effects that are useful to you (it doesn’t matter how many effects a mixer has if you won’t use any of them).
Basically, you need to get your hands on different models and see what you like the feel of. I personally have a Denon X1600 in my modular setup and love it – but it might not be at all useful to you.
Good luck with your search!

Participanttwo other possibilities for modular mixer/controller units are the Stanton SCS1M and the new Native Instruments one (that is also not out yet).

Memberyou also want an “effects send/return”. With it you can hook up things like the pioneer EFX, RMX, Kaoss Pad and route the signal to individual channels.
If you really want to go all out you can use a windows netbook running ableton for effects and run that through the effects loop 😉
The best $1000ish mixer IMO is the allen & heath xone 92 as it sounds fantastic, has 4 bands of eq to really shape the sound, midi messages on almost all the controls and the filter is the best in the business.

So for the Xone 92, do you just plug the MIDI Out into your laptop, and you have MIDI control? I’ve never really worked with real MIDI. Just USB. How does that work? And how is the response time, etc?

Memberit’s the same as USB, but you do need a midi to usb converter to get it in your computer.
The only real use for the midi on it is to map the crossfader if you are doing video performances, but you could run the whole thing as a midi controller if you wanted, but then you have just wasted all the expensive engineered circuitry that makes the Xone sound so good.
