Sorry never tried Alto, I can only say the QSC is OK for its price range.

Is there a better sub for around $1200. Thought the qsc was the way to go

I am a huge fan of QSC so I may be a little bias, but I currently have 2x QSC k12 tops and currently saving for 2x KW181s.
My friend uses 2x QSC K10s with 1x QSC KW181 and the bass is solid.

Good to know yeah I have 2 k12s I just got and getting the 181 tomorrow. Just really hope it’s better than that JBL 518S I had it was really bad

Well, one I know fairly well (on account of using it since mid 2012 or so 🙂 ), is the Mackie HD1801. It’s surprisingly tight for an 18″ (I was actually planning on buying two HD1501 15″s) and loud. Inputs/Outputs so you can use just one sub (stereo XLR in) and have high-pass to each top speakers. Also full range through outputs. 800W RMS Class-D amp, polarity reverse switch and level (+/- 6dB I think).

Always trust your ears though. I saw them for sale (guitarcenter I think) for 999 USD. So they’ll fit your budget nicely.

Sorry for commenting so long after the previous posts but want to add this:

In my (still budding) experience as a mobile DJ the nature of the room influences whether I use either those big QSC subs or my preferred choice, which is the compact but still very effective K-Sub.

If the room is not huge, a pair of K-Subs placed next to each other under my DJ table (hidden from view) rocks. By putting them next to each other you effectively increase their db capacity.

I learned this trick from a YouTube video made by a very experienced, high-end weddings DJ. I tried it and can attest it works.

Moreover, I must admit that being of DJ Vintage’s age group

What happened? The rest of my post got lost?

I meant to say that the QSC K-Subs weigh far less, something my (aging) back really appreciates.

For the record, I play a wide variety of music, from Disco and Funk, to 80s, and Funky\Soulful\Deep House, as well as Latin. I do not play much hip-hop, except at a few private events. But the fact is that you need good subs for the House I play, for example.

I have an AGE GROUP now ??? 🙁 I’d rather have a fan base rofl

But seriously, the side-by-side effect is called acoustic coupling and usually works (if you have three you can actually flip the middle one around to fire backward to lose a lot of the energy behind the speakers and cancel out nasty back wall reflections, but that’s another topic).

Frankly, my SINGLE HD1801 is generally running at -3dB and most recently at a wedding at -6dB (and I wished I could have turned it down further as the coffee cups were shaking on the tables lol). I have NEVER had them over 0dB. Even for outside gigs I keep them at 0dB max.

It’s a pretty compact 18″ and sounds as tight as a 15″ with more deep umph and no coloring until the end of the power range. It remains my number one sub (especially as part of the set with the two HD1221) and I have no desire or need to go out and buy a second one.

-3db? I must be doing something wrong. I had my kw181 turned up to like +5/6 to try and fill that room.

Probably a really big room 🙂
