    Yeah those are nice tips.

Often try to do this during my practice sessions, selecting some random songs and try mixing them togheter. Putting ourselves out of our comfort zone is something hard to do but it’s a great way to improve the creativity

    good posting 🙂

Not so much practice…but kind of linked.  If I am going to build a set, or especially a mix cd/tape/mp3 – I think it is important to record it and then listen back in an entirely different situation and on a different sound system…I usually do it in my car.

This gives me an entirely different perspective on the sounds “as a whole”.  I find when I am mixing I am listening as a dj….and sometimes listening back I will realize I play a song for too long and should mix out earlier…that kind of thing.

Also, listening on different speakers/system can make a very interesting difference too.

I like the idea of having someone else pick your tracks. I don’t actually sit there and think of what goes with what. I pick songs in the same key and just kinda go to town. Something eventually just happens. That’s how I found out that Mumford & Sons goes great with Wolfgang Gartner. HAH! I ended up producing a mash-up of the two tracks, which sounds awesome and people love it! I’ll send you the link if you ask for it.

Also, I noticed when I was doing all my DJing this summer, taking requests can also bring about a number of unknown or UN-thought-of combinations. If I had a track someone asked for, I would move into that key, then lace some tech-house under it, and whamo! Awesome combination. Luckily, I was recording all those sets. Listening back to them has given me more mixes for my weekly DJ broadcast.

Great info OP, thanks for sharing!
