ParticipantI would maybe class it in experience levels and an open one for all. I’d say maybe quarterly maybe and that’s all that I think can be said from me. A cool T-Shirt or something would be cool for the lower levels or something, because after all…there’s bragging rights ๐
As for the higher levels, noooo idea.
I’ll leave the judging up to the more experienced dj’s (well criteria)April 7, 2014 at 5:04 am #2021973Lamid45G
Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
1) Sure, can be like monthly should be sufficient, imo by doing this competition we as digitaldjtips community can get to know each of our own member closely.
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
2) Occasionally me personally, god knows Im lazy, cant remembered the last time i just do a mixtape for my own lol
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
3) Now this is kind of tough one, since its gonna be online thing (aka not a live performance) its kind of hard to judge whos the junior/senior one, unless the competition required with a video thing, not just audio, not sure how it worked in this kind
But not long ago Pioneer had a digital DJ Battle, the categories divided into Wergo Challenge, Controller Challenge, and Digital DJ Challenge
Wergo Challenge is aimed for a beginner, the contestant used the Wergo controller they provided
Controller Challenge is aimed for Intermediate, the contestant used the Pioneer DDJ-SX, that they also provided
Digital DJ Challenge is aimed for the Pro, the contestant used 4 CDJ 2000 Nexus, DJM 900, and RMX-10004) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Megamix should be imo, the easiest criteria, instead of people going crazy with scracthing, jugglin and stuff, (plus we dont know if its pre-recorded scratch or LIVE, well unless its once again a video provided with the entry)
Megamix, for example, you giving out 10 mins to perform, how many tracks you can actually squeeze into those 10 mins slot, the more the better its the point, 10 mins you can squeeze like 17 tracks thats just awesome lol
Of course along with creative mixing, the use of FX, loops and such5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
Like I said on that other post, an article of the winner in digitaldjtips is more than enough for me, I can proudly display those in my DJ Bio as my reference, and that goes a long way instead of a physical prices

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
Well yes, why not, also it would help, because when thereยดs a competition people starts improving their dj technique so it sounds better, and it push us to improve because we want to win. I would say one in 6 months would be good
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
Personally i would participate every time, so i keep learning and improving and trying other techniques
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
I think it should be a part for rookies, intermediate and pros. If not by age or genre and last by controller or cdj or vinyl
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Personaly when i record my mixes, i judge it by 3 principal criterios, the first one is obviously that sound good, the beatmatch be right, the technique is good. And the second one is the congruency of the mix, i mean, for example, that a song is playing and someone is singing and suddenly it changes to other song etc. And last but not least is if it will make people dance, when i finish a mix, and i hear it i ask myself, Does this mix make the people dance?, so i say that are the most important criteria.
5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
Well for prizes i say a pair of headphones, but it would be a lot of trouble, because for example im in mexico, so the cost of shipping would be a trouble, but that would be nice. Or maybe giving the space to make reviews in digital dj tips, that would be nice,

ParticipantI think it’s a great idea!
1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
YES! I think monthly would be good as long as the judges had the time to properly assess the entries.
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
I would certainly try and enter every time
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
My initial answer was to have different levels, but then I was unsure quite how you would define each category and whether you trusted people to honestly put themselves in the correct one (cynical I know!)
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Broadly I think there’s two main criteria with a bunch of sub-criteria:
1. CREATIVITY/MUSICAL SKILL:
– Flow (do the tracks fit well together)
– Track selection (Beatport top 100 or obscure/rare tracks)
– Creative flair (FX etc – does crossover with below)2. TECHNICAL SKILLS:
– Mixing/blending (appropriate to the style of music)
– Sound quality (good gain/eq control)
– FX/scratching/tricks (where appropriate)5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
Obviously the bigger the better (more entrants) but kit is always a good prize. If the DDT guys could flex their networking muscles and swing some radio/club spots/gigs then that’s cool too!
Overall it’s a great idea. Let me know if you need any help setting it up ๐

ParticipantMY SUGGESTION
You make the contest monthly.
You put a “theme” on each contest…that could be a genre contest, a “opening set” contest, or even some situation like “headlining at MOS” or “what would you play at a pool party?” My rationale is to make each contestant work for it, as well as align them so they can compete. So a judge could measure this.
Get volunteer judges. So when you announce the contest, people can either volunteer to compete or be a judge.
Have about 5-6 competitors in each competition. So judges do not have to listen to loads of mixes, thus they’ll get engaged and detail-oriented.
No popular vote…unless you want a month’s contest to be themed that way.
Prizes? Not sure. Depends on if the site has things to give away. Maybe take each month’s winner and have them all compete at the end of the year for a bigger prize.

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
Well the first staging of the competition imo should be monthly. Then maybe others could be added at different times in the year.
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
I would participate (or try to participate) most of the time.
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
I think that there should be a senior/junior separation.
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Well I think we should have an overall judging for the first competition. But if more specific competitions came along, then we could judge on specific criteria.
Other criteria include:
Creativity
Genre variety
Wow factor
etc.5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
I agree that an Article on DDJT would be great, as it would be something that provides exposure to the winner, as well as allows them to post the achievement on their website/page.There could be other prizes: T-Shirt, Honourable Mention, A small inexpensive piece of gear, or even *drumroll* to be rewarded with one of the courses for free
(these prizes ofcourse would have to fit the scope of the competition) And at the end of the day, just the thrill of fun-competition would be good as well ๐
6) I think that the mixes should be accompanied by a video/screen capture of the actual mix being done live, to discourage any foul play.

ParticipantI vouch for previous poster.
My two cents: themed mix, quarterly, not too long 15 mins for example. Criteria: technical performance, creativeness and sexiness (dance or not).

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
monthly contests with the top 5 each month getting to compete in a best of the year event making a mix for live streaming on New Years (5 winners each month x 7 months = 35 competitiors for the best of the year then take the top 3 and have them each make a hour mix to be played on new years eve with the winner getting the midnight set play) .2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
yes, every time, every single time3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
one big one4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
transitions, originality, flow, sets must be 30 minutes or less5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
A full 2 page write up on the monthly winner with pictures and links to their website with the rest of the monthly top 5 get honerable mentions and a smaller write up (1 or 2 paragraphs). most of us would love that kind of exposure to post on our websites and put on our resumes. the year end winner would get a once a month colum on the site for the next 12 months to talk about whatever they want that pertains to the industry.April 23, 2014 at 11:38 pm #2024656Warsuit
Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
-Yes, monthly. Every quarter the monthly winners submit a new mix for the quarterly standoff. End of the year the 4 quarterly winners are likewise to submit a new mix to determine best of the year.2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
-Yes, each and every time3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
-Just one big one. I write as well, and in writing competition the “all in one comp” approach always made the juniors step their game way up because they knew who they had to compete with4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
-I’m on board with there being a theme each month, so; adherence to theme (while judges still consider the context, after all my “poolside” mix would be drastically different from a house DJs) , skill (beatmatching, eq, structure, etc.), use of technology (find out what each DJ used to make their mix and ensure the judges are familiar with that gear so they know how well that DJ utilized its potential), bonus points for “jamability” (did the mix actually make you wanna get down within the context of the theme ie: did you actually *like* it independent of its technical merits.5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner
-Props. Lots and lots of props. I also liked the idea above of a brief plug article for the winner.April 24, 2014 at 7:27 am #2024712DJ Vintage
ModeratorUpdate:
Terry has provided a rough outline of what a competition could look like. My turn to comment on that. Hopefully we will have a change to brainSkypeStorm, or is it SkypeBrainStorm?, about it this week.
Will keep you all posted. Comments are still welcome!

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
Bi Monthly or quarterly, I’m thinking about the poor judges, who would have to sit through possibly thousands of entry’s! Also it would be nice to have an big annual comp too!!
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
Yes not sure on how often but I would participate!
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
It should be open but with the themes/setting idea, eg chilled late night mix, peak hour mix, alternative mix etc etc
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
Meeting the theme, content quality, listenability, dj development from previous mixes/ entries?
5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
Beatport vouchers?
Something that digital dj tips can get out of sponsors/advertisers easily!
The annual winner to play a night somewhere, if possible! Surely Phil can pull some strings!
Or failing that an all expenses paid trip to Phil’s villa lol??

ModeratorAre you willing to clean Phil’s pool? In which case something might be arranged, rofl.

Participant1) Would you like to see such a competition? If yes, how often (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, yearly, other)?
you know already, but to officially voice in the poll, yes, and as often as is practical, if I had to guess, bi-monthly.
2) Would you participate if we had such competition? If yes, would you participate occassionally or every time?
everytime I could for as long as it was fun or I was learning something. it would help motivate me. if not everytime, every second time.
3) Do you think there should be a senior/junior DJ competition or just one big one?
I don’t mind either way, personally I would still enter and still get something good out of it even if these vet’ dj’s kicked my ass everytime.
4) What criteria do you think a mix should be judged on?
enjoyability? not sure really. I think perhaps it should depend on the structure of the comp, do we choose our own material or have a list of tunes provided and its up to use to show what we can do with those tunes?… I think probably everyone having the same tunes to work with would make it easier to judge, or if each comp had a theme or genre… and certain set lengths I think should be a parameter also..
5) What kind of reward do you think is suitable for the winner?
winning.
hope that helps some,
PeaceMay 5, 2014 at 10:01 am #2026584Alchemy432
Participantwarsuits opinion on writing comps is basically where my ideas come from also, I used to do the same thing, and competing against the heavy weights made me step up my game too.. like I entered for fun, but when I saw what the other guys were doing I suddenly got a whole lot better at writing purely because i started putting more effort in.
