Participantinteresting idea! if there’s enough interest in the comps ideas/suggestions and it suits the site, could be awesome 😀
now to patiently wait for the opinions of the site staff… 🙂
in the meantime if anyone else has ideas about this too I’d love to hear them,
Peace!

ModeratorInteresting thoughts … except the bit about the moderators joining (I’ve heard some of Terry’s mixes – HORRORble 😉 and I can’t mix to save my life).
Let us brew on this a bit.

KeymasterYou never heard mixes of me, you just heard song productions and it is not the genre you like…

ModeratorLOL … it was a slight reference to the HORROR style mix/production you posted a while back.
As usual I was joking. Well not about the part that I can’t mix to save my life obviously. But about your mixing abilities.
Needless to say that as moderators of a forum hosting a mixing competition we would automatically be excempt from participating :-).

brewing sounds good, will leave it with you guys 😀
will be brewing soon myself… wormwood vodka.. takes 6 weeks.. also passionflower+blue lotus vodka… start it on the new moon end it on the full moon 6 weeks later…. some sort of ancient way… something to do with the effects of the moon on the electromagnetic field of the earth… and our own individual fields…
anyway, Peace!

ParticipantI love this idea. Also the entries should come with the live video from the mix so people dont cheat and post mixes they made in a production software. I think the flagship competition should be aimed at the beginner level DJ’s of the site and the grand prize could be receiving one of the courses for free 😉 Or an article on the site 😛 I like that idea too.
Come on Phil!!

Participant@BoomDraw,
nice one bruva! I had to think bout this for a while and this is what I’ve thought this morning. the idea you have for filming the mix as its happening to prove its a legit mix, i.e. not done in a daw i.e. a studio mix. This IS a good idea, however there are many situations where this won’t suit different peoples setups and we cannot guarantee everyone has video cameras or phones that can record video. what we can guarantee tho, is that, as this is digital dj tips, and the emphasis is on midi controller decks, everyone using midi controller decks has a laptop. so we should expand this ‘film yourself’ idea to ‘film your pc desktop’ with freeware programs or things like FRAPS. This way, whether ppl use serato, traktor, VDJ, etc… they can load up the screen recording software, hit record, load up the djing software and start mixing. upload the mix and the vid, and that should be enough to prove the mix is legit. make sense?
as for the beginner/advanced-ness of the competitors, I disagree with this. lets say hypothetically when you’re a noob, like myself, and you are going head to head with experienced djs with established careers… and you rank higher then them in the comp’… that could be a massive thrill. also lets say your mix sounds pretty rubbish next to theirs (more likely) but they give you praise or useful critique, that also is a very good feeling, and very encouraging. Also the idea of saying to someone “you’ve been djing for too many years or you are too talented to enter this competition” just seems wrong. the idea is to build community.. not discriminate.
You see there won’t be any “noobs only” exceptions made in the real world when you start vying for a limited number of paid club gigs against the vast number of djs out there all competing for the same thing. sure if you won enough ‘noobs only’ competitions you might get an inflated ego and a false sense of your own awesomeness.. but would that not simply harm your career in the long run? better to be down to earth and accept exactly where your talents are compared to the community as a whole… and use that information to help fuel your drive to become better. likewise, it will give you useful information about whether realistically, you are ready to play clubs, or not.
so thats my opinion anyway, and I encourage further discussion on this competitions idea and all related ideas.. the beauty of this is, that because its a community thing, everyone has a chance to contribute to designing the whole thing, and defining all its aspects… how often does that happen in life? so to everyone.. get on board with this and lets keep talking about it.
as for prizes, I’ve got nothing to say about it, like I said, winning or not, is enough for me. I leave it to others to decide if there should be more incentive or not 🙂
Peace!

Participantoops… one thing I forgot about completely, the final decisions will be in the hands of the staff here at ddjtips, so while I may actively encourage discussion about the comps and design ideas.. I have no actual authority on if it will happen or not, just bare that in mind! I don’t want to accidentally get peoples hopes up for nothing… but hey, maybe it will happen, and I reckon the more of us show interest, the more interesting it will become to the brewmasters 😉

ModeratorThe only reason for me to institute a difference between “experienced” and “beginners” would be if the treshold to get in would be great. Obviously you wouldn’t pit a go-kart racing kid of 12 against a properly financed professional F1 team driver of 25. There is no way he could win … period.
But in DJ-ing, the gear needed to make nice mix is at such a price level, that just about anybody can own the proper gear needed to do an awesome mix. From there on out it’s creativity and practice that determines the outcome.
So in the case of a DJ competition within DDJT I would not be in favor of categorizing. My two cents.
I know there is a week long moderator “get together”-week early June. So if we don’t get around to discussing it before that, I am certain there will be plenty of time to discuss the issue then.
