ParticipantHey Red_eye….I would get the Numark Mixtrack Pro II. When I first came into Digital Djing…The Numark Mixtrack Pro MK I was my first digital controller w/ Virtual DJ. I came from Vinyl and CDJ, to Laptop and Controller. Its been history ever sense :). They are priced around $199 to $249 ($249 is with a built in sound card). Keep mixing 😉

ModeratorYeah, or have a look at the Denon MC2000. Definitely quality and although it comes with Serato DJ LE, there is plenty of mappings out there for other DJ software too.
I believe the jogwheels are the same ones as on the MC3000 and MC6000, which from experience I can tell are not too big, but very nice.

KeymasterI guess the MC2000 is a bit pricey if he even considers the chinese knockoffs. (Chuck we know you love Denon 😉 )
I would agree that the Mixtrack Pro is prolly the cheapest entry you can go. Below that price most controllers are really not so good. You might also give a look at the Reloop Beatmatch which is also decent at that price point, but has fewer Software options.

ModeratorI am so sorry, didn’t read the OP too carefully I guess.
Yep, the MC2000 comes in at the high end of the low end controllers lol

ParticipantThanx everyone for your replies. I had a chat with my friend yesterday n told him that he must splash out more lol. trouble is it will only be a hobby at least at first so try explaining to the wife that you spent 200-300 euros for an expensive joystick lol. he also said that he would like proper pitch controls (takes the instinct out of the equation) and eqs for both channels (takes the behringer cmd micro out). He also played some music with the turntables and showed me a few things the old school way. so the quest continues. Terry, think you mean beatmix? also are the chinese knock offs a big no-no?

KeymasterYes if you ever had your hands on one of those chinese things, you know why …. they even feel cheep, the faders have different resitencies etc. etc. etc.
Yes sorry I meant the beatmix, little mixup in my head.
The beatmix and Mixtrack Pro all have pitch control for each deck and dedicated 3-band EQs with full kill.September 2, 2013 at 2:01 pm #43745Stavros Spartalis
ParticipantWhat do you guys think of this one? . or is it too cramped (small and too many things going on)? No sound card tho. Can find it for 109 euros.

KeymasterI think you will rely too much on the software as those jogwheels look unusable and I am not talking about scratching, but even positioning and nudging will not work. Also some functions are very cramped and it does not look like it is designed to take full advantage of any software, access to samples and F/X are prolly only via laptop really and hotcues seem bad also…
Plus you need a soundcard that will prolly cost you additional 50-60 bucks for a decent one and you are at the streetprice of the beatmix…September 6, 2013 at 9:16 am #43842Stavros Spartalis
ParticipantThanx Terry, and you are right. will try and get a mixtrack pro I on the cheap although the crossfaders are short. my friend will have to get used to the sync button ha :-). Sorry to be a pain but one more question. My friend’s four channel mixer (Numark) has a usb input. He reckons its a soundcard. do you think he could use that with his pc and a controller without soundcard and how?

KeymasterNo idea without the mixers exact specs or model name.

Participantsorry yes you re right, it’s a numark m6 usb. It has four channels and my friend has two record players which need some maintenance but work and one dual cdj, which no longer works. in this occasion, what would be the ideal connections? My friend has never used the usb port and is not that familiar with djing software but knows the fundamentals of djing. say when i was explaining to him what different things do in VDJ he understood straight away. however, he has say never used effects and loops, keylocks and so on. that’s why i’m trying to get him going.

ModeratorFrom the looks of it, the M6 indeed has a USB port. Presumably you will be able to send sound from a PC to the mixer and or sound from the mixer to a PC. It won’t “do” DVS though, so you’d need a seperate soundcard for that. It also has only one stereo signal coming into the mixer. So all your mixing would have to be done in your DJ software. And you’d still not have anything to control the software with.
All in all I’d say that the mixer is not a very good choice to step into the digital realm. Maybe get rid of it all and get a simple controller?

ParticipantAs usual, Prof. van Eekelen is spot on 🙂 Although there is a USB port, it can only be used to record your mix to disk. It’s not a sound card, has no MIDI capabilities, and won’t be seen by DJ software as an output channel. Seems to have a good rep as a cheap (~$100), reliable mixer for cdjs, but really doesn’t have a place in digital setups.

ParticipantReloop Beatmix. I’ve never heard too many bad things about Reloop controllers, and it looks pretty perfect for Virtual DJ, if you ask me. Then again, nobody did 😉

One slight correction here :-). I did not say it’s not a sound card. You CAN send 1 stereo channel back from the PC to the mixer and play it there. Just flip the Line/USB switch on channel 3 to … you guessed it 😎 USB and off you go.
It is in no way a full 2+2 or even 4+4 soundcard that you would need if you want to mix your channels on the mixer instead of in the software.
