    Hello there!

    No advice on DJ names.

For your set, going in slowly ascending blocks sounds like a decent idea, especially if you’re new. Don’t get too hung up on BPMs, go more with how the song feels. There are some tunes that sound tougher or more aggressive at 118BPM than other tracks at 125BPM.
Having said that, if you’re having someone playing prog house straight after you, maybe try and finish a bit faster than 110BPM, that’s pretty tough for a prog DJ to latch on to, and you can introduce some more varied tracks later in your set on your way up top 120BPM or so.

    Good luck!!

I think even the BPM going up then creating a bit of a lull than back up is good practice. Although you want to stay within that general BPM path, you need to look for energy levels. I know very laid back 120 bpm music and I know high energy 115 bpm stuff. So BPM isn’t the only criteria.

The big issues I have with playing in larger blocks, especially if every block is genre-specific, is that while convenient for you, it does not take the audience into account. A lot of mini-playlists gives you the piece of mind that you can play a few songs that match well together (thus taking away some of the “what to play next”-stress) while watching the cloud react and adapting your program accordingly.

As you progress you’ll know you collection well enough and your crowd reading skills will reach a point where it’s easier to go ad lib and drag tracks from your crates that you feel fit best and mix them into and out of any other track without the benefit of having it in a mini-playlist.

    Just my two cents.

    Howdy and welcome !

But I think as a DJ you should try to educate your audience

IMO, when you first started I stay away from this kind of ideology… its hurting you more than you think.

Honestly, all I care about is that my audience is enjoying themselves.

Thanks for your welcome and advice!
On structure, I figured that having a few mini-playlists ready may be a good balance for starters.
I know energy feels different for tracks, as well as the key sets some mood for example, however I’m still trying to figure out this triangle of tempo/energy/key and how the audience may react to changes – I guess that’s learning by doing though so I’ll just trust my ears for now πŸ˜‰

Hi and welcome :). I usually take all my music with me depending on the age group I’m playing for. If its teens I tend to “mix as I go” , but about the changing of BPM. I agree with youngez. If there’s someone playing prog house after you then try ending with a higher BPM. I usually ask the guy/girl that’s playing after me what the BPM of their starting song is so I know I have to end with a BPM close to that. (Its just my way of doing it).
