I’ve partially implemented something like this with Traktor on my Instinct. It’s an involved process when the controller doesn’t have it built in, but it can be done with Traktor.

As for VDJ, I can’t say for sure there, as I found VDJ mapping to be less clear, but I would suspect it should be possible.

I found the VDJ mapping system to be more flexible (that was one my key reasons for going with VDJ, but that’s just me). How have you set it up? Can you explain here?

In Traktor, I basically set one of the modifiers to be whether the decks are set to Upper or Lower. I use shift plus Up or Down arrow to switch between the two decks (and I also change the zoom level of the decks so that it shrinks the decks that aren’t being controlled). From there, I think duplicate every single mapping so that, if the modifier is set to Upper, then it affects the upper decks, if set to Lower then it affects the lower decks. It’s pretty straightforward from a technical perspective, just a lot of work to go through almost every single mapping to do it.

I found that VDJ had the appearance of greater flexibility, but when I started to dig into it, I found that it was too abstract – I didn’t have fine enough control over what I was mapping, which I didn’t care for.

How do you use 4-decks? What do you use them for? Two decks for tracks, one for acapellas and one for scratch sounds? Is that why you need four decks?

Since I’m using Traktor, I’m using the other 2 as remix decks.

The big problem using a 2-channel controller with 4 decks is the faders. You’d still only be able to play two decks out of 4, since you only have volume control for two at a time, imho.

Someone please tell me if I am wrong.

If you really use 4-decks often, I’d seriously consider getting a 4-channel controller. Often they are not that much more expensive than a 2-channel version and everything will be mapped AND you will have 4 faders!

So you mean for Scratching and Acapella-mixing I’ll need 4-channel mixer-section of a 4-deck controller? Then no point buying the CMD 4A for four channels.

Or maybe I could use something like touchOSC on my tablet to make it control the decks C and D.
