I cannot say for the S4, but I have experience with the same model for the SX. So here is my experience:

    a) Since the laptop shelf glides off the flight case … would that endanger my laptop or is there a locking mechanism to prevent the shelf from gliding off ?

Yes there is a lock and the whole thing is actually pretty stable. The whole mounts and shelf is top quality and reinforced. So I did not feel that my laptop was in any danger.

    b) Is it possible to easily reach/access the filter knobs on the far top edge of the controller with the
laptop shelf glided/positioned at the far top end ?

Yes on my model it was not a problem at all. On the pictures it looks like that the distance between shelf and top end of the controller is small, but in person you actually have lots of space to reach everything.

All in all for the purpose a good unit, the only downside was that the SX is already heavy and due to reinforced materials the case made the whole thing very heavy. But that is to be expected with a flight case…

    Hi Terry !!

Thank you for your detailed reply. You’ve addressed & allayed all my fears while at the same time highlighting a potential problem (re the weight).

I’m aware it’s gonna be a heavyyyy rig but it seems a nice all-in-one & compact solution for me. Moreover, I usually have a helper (laborer) dedicated to carry all my dj gear (PA + Lights), so I haven’t given much weight-age to the weight factor (pardon the pun).

    1 more query …

Is there any additional space in the flight case to hold/store a laptop during transit? Will the laptop slide around or can it be held/fastened via the velcro straps?

Also … Is there any additional room for power adaptors, a power extension, cables, hard disks, etc.

    Thanks again.

    Regards.

    Hey 🙂

Yes there is room below the controller where I put some cables, a mic and some power cables and a USB hub.
I did not carry my laptop in the case, but I guess there is room in there (my case was from the place I rented my PA and the controller from and the laptop was my own, so carried in my laptop messenger bag). I did see some velcros in the case, but I do not know if that is standard or the rental company added that (they mod a lot of their PA equipment also themselves…)

    Hey there,

If u ask me, flight cases are an obsolete way of transporting gear. You could look at
    1) https://www.udggear.com/by-device/native-instruments/traktors4/udg-urbanite-midi-controller-backpack-medium-black
    2) https://www.udggear.com/by-device/native-instruments/traktors4/udg-ultimate-midi-controller-backpack-small-black-orange-inside

These are just 2 bags…. U could even look at the many similar bags made by Odyssey, Magma, Namba etc. These bags won’t only fit all your equipment, but also will weigh much less than a proper case. These bags provide ample protection for ur gear, as well as u can take these bags as cabin luggage with u on a plane, instead of handing it to the luggage handlers who’ll probably toss ur precious gear into the hold.

they’ll also cost u only a small fraction of the price that u’ll pay for a flight case. And if u wanna raise ur laptop while performing, u could buy a laptop stand and still stay within budget.

But then, this is just my opinion 😉

Hi DJ Spars … Really appreciate your insight 🙂

My main reasons for selecting this Magma flight case are :
    PROS:
    a) Easy (Near-Instant) Setup/Teardown
    b) A 1-piece compact solution
    c) Works as a workstation & with the cover of the flight case placed underneath, the controller would be at a height where I would not have to bend over
    d) All 3 units would be flush at an identical level … easy to use, easy on the eyes + eye-candy
    e) Setup would look very professional
    f) Price … £109

    CONS:
My main worry … the weight … It’s not mentioned anywhere but I believe it might be approx 50 pounds.
In it’s defence: My Air-Travel with it would be virtually nil … usually will be transported in my 4×4.
Also … 95% of the time I have a hired helper who’ll be physically handling it.

Coming to the UDG Bags …

Pros: They’re NICE … reputable good quality stuff.

    CONS:
    1) Price: £125 for UDG Ultimate Midi Controller Backpack Small (black, orange)
It’s a little costlier but not a deal-breaker. BUT … it doesn’t hold the F1+X1. I’ll have to lug that around separately.

    2) Workstation: It can’t be used as a workstation. I don’t believe I can keep my controller over the bag & perform (kindly clarify this). Even if that were possible, I’d still need 2 bags/stands for my F1+X1 (extra cost) + they won’t sit at the “same” level as the controller.

    3) Setup/Teardown would be longer.

If I’ve overlooked anything I’d be happy for your angles … would really help me nail the purchase.
One last point … If I had to select between the 2 UDG bags which one would you suggest & why? I don;t see much difference between them.

    Thx & Rgds 🙂
