I like Mackie mixers for PAs and they are usually well build and hold up nicely.
I do not particularly like their DJ mixers as the layout is not for my workflow and some features are awkward, but that is personal taste, nothing wrong with them build wise.

Also, it has a “Zone” control and (input/output, not really sure which) and I’m not really sure what the function of that is. Do you have any idea what that is for?

    Just out of curiosity…

Are you planning to buy the D.4 Pro as new or second hand? I tried to buy this mixer couple years ago because it’s one of the few DJ mixers that has Firewire audio interface, but I was told it’s discontinued. Ended up getting Denon DN-X1600.

Secondhand from eBay. It’s said to be in working order, and I can return it if it isn’t

I have a Mackie 16-channel iPad mixer (DL1608) and a Mackie HD Series PA. Both build and sound quality are excellent. Never used their DJ mixers though.

Zone provides you with a second output (master signal) with a seperate volume control. You could use it to have a second set of speakers in another room playing at a different level.

You can clearly see it’s “live sound” heritage. Two full mic channels with 3-band EQ and both with XLR or combi connectors and even +48V phantom power! Aux send/return channel for outboard FX. And nice filters built in.
You can also tell its age, 4 phono channels, nice if you are a vinyl jock ;-p

Even though it is like 6 years old, the reviews are excellent for it. Also, you dont see a lot of mixers with that kind of flexibility. Seriously, line/phono/firewire on all 4 channels? Also, I love the backlit EQ knobs, plus blus is like my “main” color. Also, the filters being near the x fader is something I appreciate. Never used vinyl, because controllers are more portable, and easier to maintain than turntables, but i’m considering adding a DVS system just for home. Right now I’m running a insanely mapped Launchpad to control Traktor, but i miss having some form of platter to control music (Sold my Stanton SCS.3), and since adding a controller with a full mixer section to a setup with a analog mixer is kind of redundant, i’m evaluating my setup, and maybe just a pair of single deck platter controllers, or maybe turntables if its not crazy expensive

You should be able to pick up some turntables for not too crazy money, unless you want pristine SL1200s :-).

I didn’t know the Mackie had backlit knobs, that would appeal to me too. Don’t let the position of the filters fool you though. Those three knobs are only for the settings of the filter. For filtering you actually use the aux send knob under the EQs, which is also a more logical place to have them workflow-wise.

If you decide on the a DVS system, the phono inputs are not gonna be much use, since you’ll be getting sound from the soundcard that you will need and they will give you line out :-), but -as you stated- it has 4 of those too.

Yes, all in all I’d say it is a great analogue mixer WITH firewire support (curious to see what all you can do and wether it is Mixer2PC, PC2Mixer or both) that I for one could certainly live with, especially given the quality of build and sound as I said before.

    Good luck with it.
