ParticipantHey there,
DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK–unless you actually like them. What is the “standard” for club is unimportant. What IS important is what works for you. Frankly, if you have a lot of plugins for Windows that you like, there’s no good reason to switch. Bootcamp on a Mac works, but really, if you want to run Windows, you should stick with a PC and use the extra money you save to trick it out.
BTW, I’m a Mac user–but I started on Windows. Well, even before Windows existed actually–but I’m old. 😉

ParticipantYeah, there’s really no point worrying about what he uses unless you’re plugging into a Serato Certified mixer (DJM-900SRT for Ex.) and you’re trying to do flawless DJ swaps. Besides, I’ve noticed people tend to like those breaks between DJs as it lets them get a drink or what have you. (Could also be an American thing)
To answer your question though, that should be more than capable of doing a bookcamp setup. Just don’t forget to limit the stress on the CPU and what have you by following the basic optimization steps like turning off your wifi card and keeping the background stuff to an absolute minimum. You could probably also tell Windows to open into a “Perfomance” (I.E. super Optimized) mode all the way to the command line but you need to be super comfortable with doing that kind of stuff before you do it as you don’t want to have windows crashing all the time, even it would even work at all. But that’s only if you decide to do the bookcamp route.

ModeratorSoftware = HIGHLY personal choice. Use what works best for your workflow and forget about what “everybody else” thinks. Using two software packages in parallel is not very handy. It doubles the time you need to prep your collections and maintain your playlists and you gain absolutely nothing from it. Doing it because “everybody else” expects you to is even sillier.
Macbook = a good choice for DJ-ing, but not if you are going to use bootcamp. That’s like buying a ferrari and having a sliding door and 4 seats installed because you want to use it as a minivan occasionally. There are endless discussions on the Mac vs PC issue, with avid lovers and haters on both ends. I am primarily a windows guy, my current desktop is running out and the next one will be a windows machine again. I also have a windows laptop for IT work “in the field” (not my daytime job by the way, just something on the side). But I did get a Macbook a few years back when I started to get into sound engineering. Since I had it I used it for DJ-ing also and I have never looked back. But again, personal choice, like with the software.

ModeratorBy the way, I understand I didn’t address the plugin issue. Depending on how big a part of your workflow those plugins are, that might bring the swing vote towards getting a really nice windows laptop instead of a mac. BTW, be prepared to pay something similar as you would on a Macbook if you want a top of the line laptop.

ParticipantThank guys. I’m not really bothered about the debate on what is right or not, PC vs Mac … Bla blag bla.. Lol
I have been there & got the T-shirt, I was one of the first DJ in my area to using a desktop computer with (PCDJ & DAC 2 controller then virtual DJ). I didn’t get gigs because of this. It took a long time for Digital DJ to become the norm.
I DJ every weekend in a party bar where I use virtual DJ & video, which is fine & I love virtual DJ, I’m a Virtual DJ guy through and through BUT Most all club still DJ use MacBooks & Serato its a fact! virtual DJ doesn’t get a look in. It’s just easy to follow the crowd one less problem to deal with. It’s just for the easiness of the gigs. & to save me having a Windows laptop for weekend party bar gigs & a MacBook for my midweek trend nightclub gigs..February 16, 2016 at 8:04 pm #2356641DJ Vintage
ModeratorWhile I use a Macbook now, I started with my windows laptop with Traktor, then when I left Traktor for Mixvibes Cross. Never did I NOT get a gig because the software wasn’t Serato or the laptop wasn’t an Apple. If only because the people booking/hiring know what they talk about and let the music speak and know that gear is irrelevant or (more commonly) they are totally clueless about the gear you are bringing. Stick a glow in the dark PEAR sticker on the back of your windows laptop and smile, I say.
Seriously Steve, I can not imagine a club owner saying you can bring a laptop and controller but it needs to be a Macbook with Serato or you won’t get the gig.
