There are quite a few threads (and articles on the blog) on this subject. Most warning about the pitfall of wanting to have “everything” in your collection. I had fallen into that trap myself and am hard at work going back to a maximum working library of 800-1000 tracks. I do lots of weddings and allround stuff, so need a tad more than usual perhaps.

Yeah, I don’t want to wind up like that guy with 50,000 songs, but i was trying to get a grasp of a decent size library for a house / EDM DJ

For EDM you’re good at around say 2000-2500 tracks,it gives you enough freedom to make each set different while not being over powering for you.Personally i got about 2300 track in my library,50 up or down not sure exactly, and i find it great to work with, don’t need to update it too often and when i do it’s only about a 10-20 track update in which 10 or so tracks get retired.

For a Dance DJ, considering the average set ranges from 1 – 3 hours, I think you can get away with ~300 tracks when starting out. Just make sure they’re all tracks you really enjoy and know them like the back of your hand.

That’s about what I have right now, and they play like 24 /7 at my house (except when I’m finding new music)

What’s the use of the other +1000 tracks, you’ll never play or nobody wants. Focus on a quality, slim collection.

Mostly in case of requests, spur-of-the-moment “god that track would be perfect right now” and just as a general feel for a good size to have available at the drop of a hat

It all depends- if you’re a wedding DJ, you might need 4k-5k plus! But in reality, if you’re doing pretty much any other kind of DJing, the right size of your library is the largest number of tracks where you can say with confidence that you know each of them perfectly. For me, that’s right around 900 at the moment, but it’s getting bigger as I practice. Also, the nice thing about the digital aspect of DJing now is that if someone comes up to you with a perfect request and you don’t have it, chances are they either have it on their phone, or you can get it momentarily on your own.

I try to get around 250-300 songs of each genre I play (sometimes I lump genres together). I have about 350 hardstyle/gabber tracks, around 225 electro/dutch house tracks, about 175 progressive house tracks, then 400 misc pop/hip hop tracks.
