legality is highly dependant on the location/local laws. In general though, you don’t own the music. You just buy a license to play for yourself. If you want to play it in public you have to pay a fee to whatever governing body exists in your country. Doesn’t matter if you are playing background music in a barber shop or dj-ing a closed wedding or even playing music while you work out of your home office. You have to pay for the right to play music publically on top of ” buying” the track. Even if you found the track for free, it will most likely be free for personal use and/or evaluation purposes. But the moment you use it to perform, the same rules kick in.

Again, it varies by country. Best advice is to find a lawyer that is familiar with this stuff and have him explain what you need to do to operate in a fully legal situation.

Or you ask for what legal body exists in your country. For example in Austria it is called AKM, it is GEMA in Germany,…

Thankfully for us DJs in most countries the venue owner is responsible to pay the fees involved. I do add a line to my DJ contracts where I explicitly state that the one who hires me (whether it be a wedding pair, venue owner, manager,…) is responsible for all legal fees or taxes that apply.
