NewportDJ Drew
Participantthe last DJ should have done a bit of research. the 2nd dj should never drink DJ again.the first dj should have played last. :). This is why clubs should have basic booths that allow DJ’s to use their own gear.

MemberHaha, cheers Drew.
Also forgot to mention, the 2nd DJ forgot his headphones too :p
Also thought I had some bad mixes, as the venue has no booth monitors and I couldnt hear anything except the bass comeing from the subs 2m away from me. Need to mix with the cans some more 😀

MemberHello Jeremy 🙂
I am Very Pleased to Hear and Feel that you were able to Gain Some Valuable Information from this Gig;
As this will stand you in Good Stead for your Future Events :cool:;
My Personal Feeling is also that if I was Shoved On First that I would Feel ‘Degraded’; or at least Feel that I wasn’t being Taken Seriously Enough to ‘Headline’;
However; having read a few Articles lately; it seems that not only is there a Lot To Be Learned from the ‘Warm Up Spot’; it also takes a DJ of ‘Some Quality’ to Pull it Off Successfully;
And as Names were just Pulled From A Hat (which is No Way to go about Business); the Order was Certainly Incorrect; as You had Done Your Reseach and were ‘Ready’; where the other DJ’s made a bit of a Hash of their Sets;
Well Done My Friend 🙂August 13, 2011 at 9:39 am #5785Cybertrash
MemberAs someone in your thread on DJTT said, this “mess” puts you in a good light. From the promoters point of view, you will be the one who came prepared, mixed properly, and knew what they were doing. If I was in your seat, I’d not hesitate to contact said promoter again.

MemberThanks for the comments people.
I will admit I struggled to find the right music for the mood during warm-up, as I’m usually used to playing in the last/later slot/s. I’ll also admit I *may* have accidentally hit the cue button on the wrong deck at one point 😳
But I thank the fact that – a) I was sober and b) I brought my own controller, I didn’t rely on someone else’s gear.
Hopefully I’ll get re-booked at some point, but I’ll have to ask for a better slot…. 😀

Definitely try cueing in your phones in situations like that, if possible. It can make a huge difference.
But I’ll echo others—congratulations, and you definitely showed professionalism and adaptability, and the promoter should have taken notice.

ParticipantI think you did a good job bro and I also agree with the people here that although the whole gig was a bit of a mess, i did put you in a good light because you were the only one prepared.
So kudos to you my friend.:)

ParticipantLike it has been before in this thread, I wouldn’t work with the promoter again. When I promoted other DJs in the past, I at least had an idea of how they’re sets was going to sound. Either the promoter is new in the game or don’t know what he’s doing.

That’s my opinion too, the few promoters I’ve dealt with in the past at least listen to what style you tell them you play, and try to construct the sets around that. I think this guy was more focused on getting numbers in the door and thought that “oh yeah, the DJs can play the music” or something.
But at the end of the day, a gig is a gig (especially if it’s a paying one) and I need all the gigs I can get – more experience! And also, I’m learning how to DJ differently – here as a warm-up DJ, which might get me gigs in bigger clubs at some point.

ParticipantI’d hesitate to refuse to work with this promoter again. He may be new to the game, too, and he could turn out to be a good ally, and he could learn from you how to better hire and work with DJs.

I definitely agree with that sentiment

MemberSounds like you learned a few things and hopefully made some good contacts.
Also sounds like you are the one who appeared most professional! Hope you managed to have some fun while at it…FYI
I never do a gig without my own gear and have learned to mix in my headphones because it seems like monitors are always having problems…August 20, 2011 at 3:51 am #6032jezalenko

I’m starting to agree with you on this one. From the lack of booth monitors at this gig, to the crappy monitors at a friends gig last night. However I still use my old studio cans, which have terrible isolation (but awesome sound) and I currently have a distinct lack of money after just ordering myself a S4, so new cans aren’t high on the to buy list right now (although I’ll probably spend my money on custom earplugs first – cant replace ears!)
Thanks to all who gave feedback on this, it’s really appreciated!
