ParticipantDo not wait for *new upcoming gear that hasn’t yet been announced yet”.
If u r passionate about the art, then don’t hesitate to pay for the tools, bcuz it’s an investment. The XDJ-RX is only unit right now which can allow u to not keep ur laptop anywhere near ur setup. However, if u r not willing to shell out so much, decide ur software – Traktor / Serato and opt for a controller like the NV/NS7II/NS7III/Kontrol S8 which will allow u to essentially close ur laptop’s lid or at least tuck it out of sight.

ParticipantAs already said, waiting for unannounced technology is pointless as no matter what you buy and when, there is always something else newer in the pipe. Don’t let yourself get sucked into that “must always have new shiny” cycle. If you want to go without a computer, and you’ve set the RX as the high end of your budget, then you have a few options but not a lot.
– There is the unit from Stanton, and it is very affordable although no longer even close to being cutting edge, but a recent software update for it shows that they are still giving it some love…
– You could get a pair of CDJ350s with USB sticks and a small battle mixer. It wouldn’t be the most portable of options but it would give you that result, and might be a little cheaper depending what mixer you settled on.
– Or you could just go with the RX. It has more than enough features on it that you should be happy for some time.

ParticipantThanks for the input guys, but I should say, I already have stuff to DJ on so I am not in a rush to get some new equipment. That is why I would be happy to wait if people thought the market was going to develop quite quickly for this type of gear. It sounds like there is not much else on the horizon though, so may well just take the plunge! I like the idea that the RX is also a standalone mixer as I can plug some vinyl decks into it too.

ModeratorActually, there is a lot of expected (Pioneer mainly, but Traktor very likely too) new gear coming. Pioneer will want to cash in on their new full DJ RekordBox concept and I personally expect to see more XDJ variations (like an XDJ-SZ with 4-channels).
Traktor is bound to come up with some new controllers that fully support Stems, maybe a 2-channel S8?
My personal opinion is that laptopless DJ-ing is somehwat of an “idee fixe”. You’ll always need a computer for prepping. And even with the current state of affairs, searching in an extensive library is still a b*tch if you don’t have a keyboard or some reasonable screen real estate (I’d say 7″ is indeed the minimum, but not if you have to give half of that up for an on-screen keyboard).
What I do see happening is the laptop moving from a front and center barricade in front of the DJ to a position more to the side (for library searching and stuff like that).
Just my two cents as usual. And as usual I could be totally wrong 😀

ModeratorP.S. I don’t think the XDJ-RX supports DVS. And it most certainly won’t support it with laptopless = RekordBox DJ-ing. It is a stand-alone mixer and you can hook up turntables for regular vinyl work.

Participanthaha this is why it is so difficult. You have people saying don’t wait and then others saying more tech is on the horizon. So hard to know when to jump in.
It is an interesting discussion. I don’t mind doing some prep work on a laptop, but I just hate bringing it around with me. I don’t know why but I hate having my whole library in front of me. I get really overwhelmed. I like the idea of loading up a memory stick with some tunes and being a bit more limited in what I can play, even in my own house.
I’ve really appreciated the input here. It has cleared things up in my mind a bit. I think I am going to invest in some vinyl decks and mixer next. I have an increasing vinyl collection I can’t play at the moment. Then I can spin my vinyl and also plug in my current digital system (just a Z1 and an iPad, or K2 and a laptop). I’ll wait a bit longer to see if the no laptop gear develops further, if not I think I’ll eventually grab the RX.

ModeratorI generally agree with the “don’t wait for new gear” idea. However, there are two KNOWN new developments.
Native Instruments Stems is actually out and operational. Also the general tendency seems to be that a major Traktor overhaul is way overdue. Combine those two and there is a high likelihood that this will lead to some new hardware supporting the new feature(s).
Same is true for Pioneer. The new “Full DJ” version of RekordBox has actually been spotted at the Atlanta show this week (and looks like a mix (pun intended) between Serato for the DJ bit and RekordBox for the track management). It’s expected that this will lead to new hardware as well.
So in light of these new developments and the chance that the new hardware will actually support features that are only just emerging, my current position would be “if you are not in a hurry, wait it out for a bit”. Til when I hear you say? I’d say we should see new stuff either before the holiday season or definitely at the NAMM at the latest.
Just my two pennies.

ParticipantCouple of points:
1. Pioneer is also using tablets and phones for preparing tracks so it’s kinda no-computer idealogy even at preparation-level.
2. There has been usb stick players for ages. If you don’t want/need the things computing and analyzing brings, you have plenty of old and new hardware even before controllers came.
3. XDJ-Aero is already quite cheap (499€): http://www.pioneer.eu/fi/products/44/1992/34209/XDJ-AERO/page.html
support may stop anytime soon, if not already stopped. I didn’t like the limited options that hardware and recordbox gave.
4. Standalone seems to be only quite rock solid option, if you want stability. Sad but true.August 14, 2015 at 5:00 pm #2239941DJ Spars
ParticipantThe aero i believe was quite the gimmick and not upto scratch for the digital dj……

Participant“4. Standalone seems to be only quite rock solid option, if you want stability. Sad but true.”
Not true at all actually. I wouldn’t trust standalone units any more than anything else. I’ve had CD players die mid show. USB keys that won’t read. Anything that requires digital processing of one sort or another to run is subject to the occasional glitch.

ModeratorI had the unbreakable LPM 7.1 mixer (fully analogue) lose two channels on me during a gig. With 7 channels on there it was easy to fix, but goes to show that anything mechanical and or electronic CAN fail.
