    Shut down everything you dont need, kill the wi-fi, make sure everything works before the show and dont change any settings before the show!!! I’ve never had a problem with Traktor or VDJ crashing (mind you I have 8GB of RAM!), however I once found out that changing settings in Traktor right before a show can be fatal.

    Honestly, if you can, buy an Audio 2, they are a fantastic soundcard, and should do you well for many years (and is upgradable to Traktor Pro 2). If you dont have the cash, I strongly recomend you start saving!!!

    Another option if you have two headphones outputs of your laptop is you download the free ASIO4ALL drivers, which allow you to use one out for the the cue, and the other for the master. Also, you can buy a cheap 1/8″ splitter cable so you can plug in some cans.

    First off, which OS are you using? In the case of Win XP, there is a program called nLite, you can use it to remove all unneeded components from your XP install.. after you install it, you can kill a LOT of processes and services that are unneeded and you can remove a fair amount of components. After that, it’s just a matter of defragging and keeping your laptop clean and I guarantee it won’t crash on you.

    Seems weird but Macs don’t crash so much…wins crash more…but if you follow the above suggestions you are “safe”

    To be honest, my Mac has crashed on me more times than my PC with Traktor, but for some reason it doesn’t do it anymore. Weird.

    Just make sure that you kill all the processes you don’t need whilst DJing by going to Task Manager and clicking “End Process” on programs you don’t need.

    Keep the laptop clean and dedicated to DJing. Uninstall all software not related to DJing especially anti-virus – to keep your PC safe only use trusted websites that you get your music from. Don’t let the hard disk get above 50% full – on PCs the HD will slow down as it gets full. Macs don’t suffer with the same problem.
    In Windows turn down any fancy graphics settings. Update your drivers.

    Well, I use Windows 7. Apparently there are background programs that I have to remove? I don’t get gig opportunities much so my laptop has its fair share of games (2-3?) and music management softwares.

    Google is your friend for those 🙂 There are several lists of all processes along with explanations and consequences of turning them off. Take a look around the internet, optimization guides are plentiful.

    You can do a miriad of things to mess up your laptop within windows with the aim of making it more reliable.

    My theory, test it as a live situation. Pack up all your stuff, re-setup, play for a few hours. Maybe leave the laptop on for a bit and go back to mixing after an hour, pull some of the controllers out of the usb ports, plug them back in, take out the power cable, get that back in too.

    All of these things have the potential to balls up your laptop. But if your lappy can handle all of this, you should be fine live 🙂

    Personally I dont beleive that macs are better. I went out and got a refurbed HP lappy, set me back £250 with a 500Gig HD. A bit of tinkering and its the perfect gig machine. Mind you, its completely dedicated to traktor and the only time it sees the internet is through NI’s service center. But then I can afford to do that, because both my windows laptops cost less than 1 mac. Go figure.

    I had some bad experiences using Windows whereby the sound would keep cutting out. Couldn’t figure out what it was, so I saved up for a Mac and have never had trouble (using the same sound card too).

    Anyway once you get your laptop stable don’t make any changes to it. The worst thing you can do is start tweaking it the night before!
