Theoretically I say yes. You can probably set the outputs to the soundcard as you do now and still have the controls (players not mixer) of your S2 working. Practically, I’d say why bother. If you love your mixer, go get yourself two media players with midi mode (anything from American DJ to Pioneer) or single deck controllers (several brands, check out the Denon SC2000s for one), instead of a full controller like you have now or the S2. In the case of a mediaplayer you can probably forgo the soundcard, in the case of single deck controllers you can’t. It would be somewhat of a modular setup, meaning more setup time, more cables, more points of failure and less integration with your DJ software.

The alternative is getting used to using the mixer and fx portion of your S2. This is, imho, the easiest and most efficient way to set things up.

You can probably sell your DJM900 and get some serious money for it that you can use to buy some other gear or just stick in your piggy bank for when you go buying new tracks for example.

Thanks Terry_42 and DJ Vintage for your quick replies!!! As you said Vintage, there’s too many points of failure in the set up you described.I guess when the time is right I’ll sell the 909 and pick up an S2.It just sucks that you don’t have the option of using an external mixer but I get it.Everybody wants things as compact and as “all-in-one” as possible.

The S2 is just not made for this function. The S4 has the DVS function and transitions built in, but I do not see any advantage when using it with your mixer… as you said everyone wants it compact and that is the way those things are designed.

Yes you could prolly rig something odd up, but it will never be hassle free to setup…

Yes Terry_42,,it just looks like too much hassle! I’ve been looking around the net to see if there is another controller (with no sound card integrated) and I can’t even find one.I guess I’m stuck with my setup until I’m willing to say goodbye to my DJM-909 and to be honest,,I’m just not ready yet! I adore that mixer!

I’ll have to say again what I just said in a much longer reply which somehow disappeared into cyberspace.

Keeping it short because I am slightly aggrevated about it.

It sounds like you need to lose the all-in-one controller (regardless of whether is has no soundcard – VCI-100 or does – S2).

You clearly love your mixer too much. Toss the VCI, buy two midi-enabled DJM like mediaplayers (either full-size like the DJM-900 or something of the smaller variation).

It will be a setup like that with which many generations of DJ grew up. Left player, mixer in the middle, right player. The only difference is having two usb cables running from your media players to your PC to control the decks in your DJ software.

By the sound of it you don’t seem to miss the FX in your software as you prefer the ones in the 909.

Setup is straightforward (actually easier than your current setup with your external sound card) and pretty fool-proof.

Added bonus: stick some CDs in a wallet or case and you have backup in case something happens to software/laptop.

    Greetinx.
