Yes people actually do this. Why is beyond me.
    2)
No you do not need the CDJs. But you can always get a controller with decent jogwheels. I personally could not live without jogs, not for scratching, but I do beatmatch and some nudging is a good thing to do. Also scanning through a song to make queue points is a good thing.

None. CDJs are there because they were the old industry standard and many DJs (like myself for a long time) are just to lazy to convert over to a good controller. A good DJ controller will always get you more options and features to outperform DJs only using CDJs, period.

This is actually not an easy one and would have to go with: You might be.

I personally dislike the X1s as they are to small for my taste. The good thing about them is that they fit nicely into the DJ booth if the booth is already cramped with CDJs.

Personally I would check out which software you want to use first and if money is not the biggest issue check out these controllers:
    – Native Instruments S4 and S2 (Traktor)
    – Numark 4Trak (Traktor)
    – Reloop Digital Jockey 3 ME (Traktor)
    – Pioneer DDJ-SX (Serato DJ)
    – Reloop Terminal Mix 4 (Serato DJ)

And I would highly recommend checking out our online DJ course, the first 2 videos will answer A LOT of your basic questions before you buy a controller:

The two X1s + mixer combo is actually really common from what I see lately especially among techno DJs. Often you’ll see that paired up with an F1 or something else for samples ect…

The X1s are great because they allow the controller DJ to set up anywhere with minimal effort in moving stuff all around the DJ booth which drives the other DJs nuts as well as the sound crew for that particular club. Personally I also like having a jog wheel and the X1 does seem odd to me however if I was in the position where I want my controllers no matter what, that’s the route I’d go.

As I said, Ive settled on Traktor. My Bible is in the mail and I will probably read it in a day or two to help me finalize my hardware decisions. My earlier post about making re-edits in Ableton….lets just say it will be Traktor for Djing and a separate DAW for things like that.

One Concern is the fact that the majority of these articles involving use of pioneer mixers with traktor software are using traktor scratch, à la timecode vinyl or timecode CD. I won’t be doing this and want to be sure that I can. Also I found some information elsewhere that says you can plug RCA cables from the record out hub on the back of the mixer into one of the channels of the mixer, probably channel4 and then in Traktor settings set the record toggle to external mode.

Another thought I had was: could you use two, 2-channel controllers to use all four decks. Like two that don’t have built in soundcards as this wouldn’t be needed with the external mixer?

I’m probably just gonna get an S4 and be done with it for now, but I have a feeling something is coming from NI with the recent price drop.

I just think it would be nice as a digital DJ to be able to have such small gear that you could hook up easily to a clubs mixer, know how to use, and achieve best possible sound quality in that venue.

My friend the resident DJ has a class that he teaches one-on-one that ends in a month with you performing live. Its a bit pricey, but can you really put a dollar value on life’s best experiences? I will take Phil’s course, practice hard, read EVERYTHING, and then maybe do that course with as much in my head as I can get when I start in order to make the most of the situation. I’ll keep DDJTs posted.

Another suggestion might be the Gemini CDJ-700. Phil did a review on these in the blog, and they seem to be a versatile solution for most situations. The CDJ-700 is one “platter” so you would need a two, plus a mixer. As for an all-in-one solution, there was also a review on the Gemini CDMP-7000, which is two CDJ-700s with a mixer in the middle built as one unit. Because of their ability to act as CDJ, as well as MIDI controllers, you may want to look at the reviews, because they seem to be a relatively cheap investment (around 1000) for a pretty professional setup
