KeymasterGet the 615 the bass will be considerably better, I think it is well worth the price.

ParticipantThanks very much for all your input – they are very helpful. Indeed, it is tough choice since the QSC 12s costs just about $50 more than the JBL. The JBL has a crown amp – so they are great, but there is little about built-in protections for the amp as does the QSC (for example through the use of a fan).
As a result, I am being swayed by the protection and connectivity options at the back of the QSCs. But I am not sure if these 2 alone are enough to justify the added cost.
I do plan to get a subwoofer in the next couple of months, before I add a second pair of 12s. Do I have to necessarily go with a QSC subwoofer or can it be matted to a different sub ? If so, what would you recommend?
Thanks – Oyiwaa

ParticipantTerry_42: thanks very much for your input and insightful comments about the JBL. I agree it is better to get the JBL 15s, if I am going to be starting without a sub. How would you compare the JBL EON 515XT to the PRX615s (which cost about $200 more). In other words, is the additional power the main reason for getting the PRXs?
Thanks – Oyiwaa

KeymasterWell they are meant for different things basically.
The Eon is a “highly portable” solution that is also meant to be used alone etc. Hence it also has a little higher frequency range, but deliver slightly less “punch” in the package. So for smaller venues and more “listening” events due to very good audio reproduction the Eon series is very well suited also without subs etc.The PRX is the classic PA workbeast. It takes a huge punch and moves a lot of air. It has a little less clarity and frequency range, but where it puts sound it does not crack up or clip easily. It is very easy to daisy chain and build a huge setup with multiple PRXs and subs. It also has some limited DSP functions as far as I know them.
So if you feel that you are riding the edge of being uderpowered the PRX will punch more, if your goal is excellent sound quality with good headroom and not play them cranked to the end 100% of the time, but use them in the 70% range, the Eon will deliver and are even more portable.
If you are on a tighter budget you can also look out for the cheaper HK lines, Peavey or Mackies. They are all solid manufacturers that I have worked with before.

ParticipantI have the intention of getting the JBL EON 515XT. I have nothing but good news about them. Not sure if this enough to help you with your decision.

ParticipantThanks very much ….. I just placed an order for the PRX612Ms from ZZounds. I ordered just a single cab, and plan to get a second by years end. But the sub now is the question. The PRX versions are so expensive that I might end up waiting for a long time to get one -maybe sometime next year. I might do one or two gigs before then. Given this, would it be better to get the PRX615s … they are so huge though. And when I get the subwoofer later, wouldn’t it be too much for my type of setup – about 200 people in large room?
The PRX615s haven’t shipped yet, so I still have a window – a couple of hours to change the order.
Cheers, Oyiwaa

KeymasterIt wont be to much. I have played with 615s + a sub at gigs with 80 people. It just means you have a lot more headroom and placement etc. is much more easy and sometimes for smaller gigs or weddings I leave the sub away as the added thump is not needed, where with the 12s I prolly would want the sub all the time.
The Eons are always a nice alternative, as the 15s should also be enough for 200 peeps and they are very portable.August 24, 2012 at 1:06 pm #26265Oyiwaa Noela
ParticipantTerry_42: thanks very much for the message. I successfully returned the 612s. I should be ready to order the 15 inch next week. So far, the PRX 615M is the top choice, followed by the EONs. Cheers, Oyiwaa

MemberPRX612M sounds better than K12, but I’ve read in some other threads about troubles with the PRX in terms of overheating issues because of the lack of a fan and problems on unstable A/C supply. I’ve tried many powered speakers available in the market, but I personally like Yamaha DSR or DXR lines in terms of sound and reliability. Those two lines were developed in collaboration with their sister company called NEXO, a SR touring speaker giant…You will be impressed with the sound and power they deliver.

ParticipantThanks very much, MikeD and Terry and others: I am still weighing my choices – though I was leaning towards the PRX612Ms, I actually read abit about the Yamaha DXR15s and liked its power and versatility compared to the PRX12s. I went to the local GC and listened to each but noted little difference though it appears the DXRs had a bit more lower end. I really liked this + its versatility. What is your opinion about their reliability and versatility, in light of my needs?
cheers, Oyiwaa

ParticipantHello Terry, MikeD et al:
Just an update: I finally decided and went with the Yamaha DXR15. It arrived today – and I am happy with the way they sound even without the sub. Within the next couple of days, I will get a second one – ie the Yamaha DXR15. Later, I will consider the Cerwin Verga subs (CVA-118) to complete the set.
Thanks again for your all support, and patience with my extremely noob questions: I am still learning 🙂
