Is counting to 8 instead of 4 in your beat counting wrong?

I usually do 8 count.. but, in college i was taught to do
1,2,3,4
2,2,3,4
3,2,3,4
4,2,3,4
repeat.
Now that I’m starting to use CDJs more often I still use the 8 count or listen for the 2nd “drop” and then play the next track as it usually ends up in time with each other
