Well make up your mind about software first.
It is not that Traktor is the end in all software, there are many other software products that are used to great success. Personally I use Serato DJ, there is VDJ Pro etc.
The workflow and how you DJ is different with each software so that is what you should make up your mind about.

Then of course you can get an advanced controller, but also the S4 is not the “end of all things”, there are other high ends like the DDJ SX (Serato), 4Trak (Traktor), VCI-400 (pretty much all software),…

The thing is that such a controller can be a bit overwhelming for a beginner, but if you are not easily scared it is also an investment for the future as you are unlikely to grow out of it quickly.

Well, I started djing with launchpad…. bad decision, then i bought an S2 and I am in love. Everyday I am like darn homework (Edited: not excused sorry no bad language here) I wanna make a mashup. I think an S4 would be good, but the S2 is plenty. For a 4 track controller tho the VCI-400 and the DDJ-SX are imho better controllers than the S4 or FOR SURE the 4Trak

I started simple on a Mixtrack Pro, and outgrew it after about 6 months.

I then got a Reloop 4 Deck controller, and liked it, although I was trying to play around with too many things, and lots of the options were still quite overwhelming to me.

I then got an s2 and love it.

I also considered the s4, but you need to take into account that the s4 is now quite an old model, and how much longer will it be before NI do an updated version? Which will reduce the resale value of an s4 massively. Just another thing to consider.

I started about 6 months ago with a S4. I love mine and added a F1 to it. I don’t think its too much controller. I have been making mixes and doing a small bit of mash ups, and am starting to get a lot better. I like using the filters on my S4, so I am not sure what it would be like not to have them. (The S2 doesn’t have them, but u can map them)I would say go for it. But there are so many new awesome controllers. That new Pioneer looks amazing and the jogs on it feel great too. Do plenty of research. Good Luck!

Don’t know, I didn’t like the feel of the jogs on the 400, and DDJ-SX isn’t as optimized for traktor as the 4trak. I’ll take the 4trak w/ traktor over either of these controllers anyday (though if there was a ddj-tx, might need to rethink that).

Will say, wish there was 4 channel monitoring on the controller, and 8 cue points instead of 5. The ergonomic setup of the fx is nasty though
